About MichiganArtiste

Once an artist, always an artist!

I started creating from a very young age. Inspired by the artists in my family (my aunt and grandfather), I sketched and painted whenever I could. My passion for art took a firm hold in high school, where I was president of the Art Club, and it flourished years later when I pursued a degree in Art Education at Eastern Michigan University. My focus at this point was on watercolor, and I enjoyed developing an unconventional style with the medium. After receiving my degree in 2007, I taught art to elementary and middle school students at a charter school for a couple of years before deciding to go back to school. I found that I'd had little time or energy for my own work, and I'd missed it!

In 2009 I moved to Grand Rapids to attend Kendall College of Art and Design, where I graduated summa cum laude with my Master of Fine Arts in Studio Art – Painting. It was here that my love for abstract painting grew, and where I transitioned from watercolors to oils. I still paint with both media, choosing the medium that will best serve my subject matter. I often refer to myself as an Abstract Realist, as many of my paintings are painted very realistically, but are cropped so that they become abstract. I also love painting whimsical creatures (like balloon animals come to life) and am working on illustrating a children's book.

Outside of my own work, I teach oil and acrylic painting at our local arts center, watercolor at our local senior center, and share my love of crafting through occasional workshops. I also enjoy teaching kids camps in the summer when I'm not busy working as one of the chairs of the annual Saline Celtic Festival. Outside of art, I have a passion for poetry, literature, architecture, and history (especially world’s fairs and old or abandoned buildings!).

All of these things have combined in some way or another on my Etsy shop! My shop started out as a way to sell my beaded jewelry (which I don't do much of anymore), and has become a way for me to share my art and craftiness (in an artsy way, not a nefarious way) with my friends and fans!
