Artist and Educator
I started my shop on May 24th, 2011. Since I finished school in 2004 with a degree in Ceramics I hadn't been able to focus on one body of work, until I became obsessed with birds and paper cutting. Someone mentioned I could sell them, and so I did.
I really like the idea of making art that's accessible to everyone, keeping the cost low and creating work that takes minimal space to produce and store. This was a new concept to me after my clay work - which was so expensive to maintain a studio: firing, storing, shipping, breaking...
It's been about a year since I've made any new papercut birds, so I'm going to phase them out of my shop and get some new paintings in. So stay tuned. And be sure to buy a bird if you like it, because they won't be around forever!
I am an artist and art educator living in Portland, ME. I like to make a lot of different stuff - including drawings, paintings, papercuts, clay, and fiber arts. I have recently discovered a passion for fishing... more work coming soon!
My New Year's resolution was to learn more about birds, so it makes sense that they became my obsession. I have always been intrigued by the figure and the environment it occupies, and have become more and more interested in the idea of a spirit animal - an animal a person can identify with that would act as a guide through life. I like the personalities we can find within animals and I like thinking about which person belongs to each animal. My spirit animal is two white rats so I'm sure there will be some of those coming soon. But right now it's all about birds.
