Having a drawing for these earrings over on my Facebook page. :) Check out the details at facebook.com/kellscreations
My first shop update! This should be fun. I had some pretty stone #heart beads stored away and decided to start with this stormy blue sodalite. I finished the pendant a few days ago, and finally decided on variegated blue silk to complete the piece.

About

The Accidental Jewelry Artist

I don't wear much jewelry. I never have, really. Strangely enough, I still don't. But I have become enthralled with making it. I'm an accidental jewelry artist.

How did this happen?

Ten years ago if you had asked me what I thought I'd be doing today, I might have said "Reading my name and the title of my book on the New York Times bestseller list!" For years I was a floral designer (or librarian, or USPS clerk, or calligrapher, or home-schooling mom) "by day," and a writer of historical fiction novels "by night." Ultimately my efforts culminated in one published novel and one published novella.

I was on my way to fame and success, right? Uh . . . no. I changed genres and started writing a historical fantasy novel set in 10th century Ireland. My agent loved my new novel, and the book received some positive feedback from an editor at a major NY publishing house, but ultimately she passed because they had just bought a book with a similar setting from one of their established authors. At the time I was no longer enjoying anything whatsoever about writing, so I decided to take a break. My childhood love, art, started whispering my name, so I decided to fulfill a dream I'd had in high school and enroll in the correspondence course offered by Art Instruction Schools.

Half-way through that course, as the 30-something mom of a college student, I decided to enroll in college myself to get the degree I had put off. I decided to major in studio art. And that was when I discovered the wonderful world of art history. As a hobbyist calligrapher, I'd always been interested in illuminated manuscripts. But now there were the Renaissance masters and the pre-Raphaelites to admire, along with the gracefully stylized nature elements in the Art Nouveau movement represented by Alphonse Mucha and Rene Lalique. I devoured the gorgeous images of Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic architecture. My muse had awakened from her coma!

I kept thinking I'd get back to writing "someday," but instead I took courses in Photoshop and Illustrator to make my art skills more marketable. Still enamored with the idea of fantasy storytelling, my ultimate goal was to license my fantasy art for greeting cards, prints, clothing, and gift items. It was while I was taking those continuing ed. courses that I stumbled on a beginning wire wrap jewelry class.

Pardon the cliché, but the rest, as they say, is history. Now I spend my creative time incorporating my fantasy artwork with my love of storytelling, and I use my ability to sculpt, wrap, weave and otherwise manipulate all kinds of wire and other materials into unique and graceful pieces of wearable art.

I now have a very happy and mostly productive muse.
