About

Little shop of Joy

This tiny shop is the culmination of a lot of love, joy, tears, and commitment. My art is constantly transforming...and transforming me! I've been painting for twenty years, and I've sold it for nearly as many, but have only recently begun to sell my work online. My desire is to find a niche in this wonderful community of sellers and buyers. I love Etsy - I love that it celebrates makers, and I'm thrilled take part.

Here are a few answers to your most burning questions:

Q. What supplies do you use?
A. I work primarily with Daniel Smith watercolors, Micron ink pens, Arches watercolor paper, and Ampersand aquaboard. And a pencil. Everything starts with a pencil on paper.

Q. What is your background in art?
A. Until my teens, I was self-taught (and obsessed!). In high school I took private art lessons, where I grew tremendously. At my alma mater, John Brown University, I majored in Illustration, which involved a lot of late nights building toys and drawing cartoons. Tough, I know. Since then, I've taught private lessons and started showing my art in fairs and galleries, which I love! I've also failed a lot. I'm not one of those artists with a tidy success story, and I'm ok with that.

Q. What inspires you?
A. Travel, gardens, dreams...really, what doesn't inspire me? I feel like everything I paint is a piece of myself, my observations and experiences.

Q. What are your hopes for your art?
A. My goal is to enjoy painting, and to make fine art accessible to as many people as possible, so that THEY can enjoy it too! Too often, art is seen as such an enigmatic, highbrow thing, and that's silly to me. Art enriches everyone. Art is FOR everyone. That's what keeps me going. For example, I recently almost sold a very large piece, but the buyer bailed at the last minute. That was disappointing. However, a few hours later, I gifted a piece to a woman who was moved to tears by my art. That was FULFILLING. It's not about money or "success". It's about movement, love, and beauty.
