I'd been a freelance illustrator since 1988, and my original "Kern Alphabets" began as airbrush design experiments which I carted around in my big leather portfolio to get illustration work in the big city and Connecticut. Back then there were no illustrated alphabets (except the great Erte's from the 1930's) and mine was well received, in the way things were liked, shared and viral before there was an internet--people picked up the phone and called my studio to ask if they could publish the art for their promotion, for books and licensed products, and even (in the case of the world's largest Children's Museum at Indianapolis) if they could have the original paintings for their permanent collection! So, blah, blah, blah, learning the art of business for the business of art.....then, Children! I've been lucky enough to stay home with my son, and since our property is "Boy Heaven", to host his many playdates too. Boy Heaven has a stream, an old millpond, a waterfall, and a hiking path through plentiful woodlands. Logs that need chopping and frogs that need catching. An old shed that we turned into a play-firehouse for little firefighters. And of course, my art studio with tools and worktops for gluing, cutting, banging, experimenting. The kids like it, too, LOL. But kids are so naturally inventive, that I've benefitted as much from their wacky ideas as they have from mine. This Etsy shop will explore the possibility of selling our creations.
