I work predominantly in watercolour paint, watercolour pencil and polychromo pencils on pieces of reclaimed wood.

Wildlife seems a fitting subject matter for the wooden canvases and largely, a piece of wood lends itself perfectly to a certain animal or scene.

All wood is carefully prepared by sanding as the first step. This creates a lovely smooth surface to work on and brings out the natural colour and grain of the wood.
I tend to leave the rest of the wood as I’ve found it. This means that often tree bark is still attached and there’s sometimes holes, other natural blemishes and even old nails sometimes still in place. I believe this adds to the rustic feel and keeps a bit of the history of the wood, rather than cutting and sanding back to look like any piece of wood you could pick up in a DIY store.

Wood is locally sourced. I have off-cuts from both The Forest Depot (www.forestdepot.co.uk), based on Gare Hill in Frome and from Reclaimed Industrial Design (@richardbrownreclaimedindustrialdesign), based in Exeter. I’ve also been known to keep pieces of wood destined for the fire as they’ve somehow appealed to me and bits I’ve randomly found on my travels.

Once finished, all work is sprayed with an artists varnish to help protect and seal.

Hooks and twine are then added to the back, ready for hanging in your home, the piece is signed at the front with my initials and a sticker of authenticity is added to the back.

I try hard to ensure I’m as resourceful as possible, which means that as well as repurposing the wood and giving it a new life, I also use recycled packaging where I can and recycle old bubble wrap and envelopes etc.

If you’re interested in discussing my work further or have an idea for a commission, please do get in touch, I'd love to hear from you.
