About

New and vintage ribbon under glass for unique pendants

Hello! My name is Courtney and I live in beautiful Denver, Colorado. Welcome to my shop! If you haven’t figured it out already, I’m pretty obsessed with ribbon. I work exclusively with Jacquard ribbon – that is, ribbon with a woven embroidery on it. My parents traveled in Europe in the 70s and brought back all kinds of ribbon and it was always around growing up. As an adult I wanted to make something out of it but also wanted to preserve the ribbon for a long time. What I came up with was a way to take snapshots of the ribbon and put it under glass in pendants for earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings. And then I discovered there was a whole world of new ribbon with beautiful and novelty designs that aren’t available in the vintage ribbon – so I of course work with both!

I am inspired by texture, color, culture and mood. By placing the ribbon under glass, the embroidery from the woven ribbon magnifies, highlighting the design and texture. Depending on which section I use, I can create a dramatic and edgy necklace or a whimsical and breezy earring or any combination in between. Vintage ribbon is texture heavy and simple in its design while newer ribbon has bold colors and vibrant designs. I love creating pieces that can help people express who they are in that moment.

I have most recently been working heavily with newer and vintage ribbon from Europe. Swedish folk design, German dirndl ribbon, both vintage and new, inspire me. My favorite part of sharing my jewelry is when someone sees a design that strikes a part of their identity – maybe it is a vintage ribbon from their heritage or finding that perfect necklace of their favorite animal. My shop name is Swahili for “little hippo” – my favorite animal – and always reminds me of my time working in tourism in Africa. Americans have a great mix of cultures and whether I am inspired by a Swedish Dala horse or a Masaii shuka I love the feeling of what experiencing other cultures brings me. I hope to bring that to others with the jewelry I make.

Thanks so much for visiting my shop. Please look around and reach out with any questions. Do you have ribbon (or embroidered fabric) at home that you would love see in a pendant? Let’s make it happen! I think the pieces that have a personal connection are the best! Happy exploring!

I grew up with a crafting bug learned from my mother. I grew up in the Midwest but have lived all over the United States. Now in Denver, I love to create unique jewelry from beads and ribbon. I love sharing my creations with so many people on Etsy!

I accept refunds and exchanges for undamaged items within 3 days of receipt minus shipping fees. Return shipping is paid by the buyer. Please keep in mind that I use recycled, salvaged and vintage beads so not all beads will be perfect sizes, shapes, etc. This mostly refers to smaller seed beads but some of the larger beads are handmade and vintage and will have small flaws, all of which I detail in photos. If you have any questions before purchase please don’t hesitate to ask. I do my best to describe all items as well as possible so if you have any concerns upon receipt please contact me.
