New and vintage ribbon upcycled into wearable accessories

Hello! My name is Courtney and I live in beautiful Denver, Colorado. Welcome to my shop! If you haven’t figured it out already, I am pretty obsessed with ribbon and texture. I have spent most of my life finding ways to be a maker and crafter. In high school some of my favorite days were spent with a friend making clothes and necklaces that we sold at concerts to support our music habit. As I got older, I chose a very traditional academic route that shifted me away from creating my own work but exposed me to creative diversity as I visited weavers in Tanzania, bead makers in Ghana and perfumers in Egypt studying tourism in Africa. Despite leaving academia I can't help but be influenced by the color, texture and culture that I experienced traveling and try to incorporate what I saw into the things that I create today. Finally having the opportunity to start making jewelry and crafts again, I looked to my own cultural heritage as a starting point for finding my own voice in my creative work. Scandinavia and Germany has a great history in woven textiles, especially the everyday use of woven jacquard ribbon. I grew up wearing family vintage ribbon in my hair and having ribbon as a part of my outfits almost every day. The creation of Kiboko Kidogo has been a goal of reviving the popularity of woven ribbon while also making it modern, sophisticated and fun. I'm really just a ribbon collector with a crafting habit!

I am inspired by texture, color, culture and mood. Depending on what type of ribbon I use, I can create a dramatic and edgy piece of jewelry or a whimsical and breezy accessory or any combination in between. Vintage ribbon is texture heavy and simple in its design while newer ribbon has bold colors and vibrant designs. I love creating pieces that can help people express who they are in that moment.

I have most recently been working heavily with newer and vintage ribbon from Europe. Swedish folk design, German dirndl ribbon, both vintage and new, inspire me. My favorite part of sharing my work is when someone sees a design that strikes a part of their identity – maybe it is a vintage ribbon from their heritage or finding that perfect necklace of their favorite animal. My shop name is Swahili for “little hippo” – my favorite animal – and always reminds me of my time working in tourism in Africa. Americans have a great mix of cultures and whether I am inspired by a Swedish Dala horse or a Masaii shuka I love the feeling of what experiencing other cultures brings me. I hope to bring that to others with the jewelry I make.

Thanks so much for visiting my shop. Please look around and reach out with any questions. Do you have ribbon (or embroidered fabric) at home that you would love see in a pendant? Let’s make it happen! I think the pieces that have a personal connection are the best! Happy exploring!

I grew up with a crafting bug learned from my mother. I grew up in the Midwest but have lived all over the United States. Now in Denver, I love to create unique jewelry from beads and ribbon. I love sharing my creations with so many people on Etsy!
