About

Carving a creative niche at the intersection of glassmaking and printmaking.

My name is Laurie Freivogel and Kiku Handmade is my glass studio located just outside Chicago, Illinois. While I've been creating ever since I can remember, I only started working with glass in 2004 after discovering the indie craft movement that was growing in Chicago. At that time, I owned a fused glass pendant that I just loved and decided that's what I wanted to try my hand at. I bought myself a small kiln, some books and glass, set up a studio in my basement and started experimenting. Soon enough, I was creating humdrum pendants, earrings and pins that were lovely, but unfulfilling. I needed a new direction.

My BFA is in drawing with a concentration in printmaking. Not having access to a printmaking studio after college, I had to satisfy my creativity with things I could make in a small apartment - mostly hand bound books, small drawings and paintings - until we bought a house and I had room for a proper studio. About a year after I learned the basics of glass fusing, I realized what I had been pining for – imagery and pattern. I had a small silkscreening setup in my studio already that I used mostly for fabric and thought maybe I could use it to incorporate my designs with the glass.

I spent weeks researching and experimenting with materials and techniques until I figured out what worked. I knew I had found my niche and began working on the designs that give Kiku it’s distinctive style. My imagery and drawings are primarily inspired by pop culture, pattern and nature. I particularly love mid-century modern and Japanese design aesthetics, in fact the name "Kiku" means "chrysanthemum" in Japanese. Using fine enamels, I print with multiple screens onto layers of glass to create depth and, using my knack for color and composition, pair it with an amazing glass color palette. While my work is very graphic, I'm a practical girl so most of my pieces are as functional as they are pretty.

When I'm not in my glass studio, you might find me sewing, knitting, seeking out graffiti with my family, or roller skating (I take a roller derby inspired fitness class and my derby name is Glass Kicker ;)

I'm Laurie Freivogel, and I started fusing glass - and my business Kiku Handmade - in 2004.  As a self-taught glass fuser, it took me a little while to figure out how to incorporate my artwork with glass, but once I did, I knew I found my niche.

Shipping
I ship the smaller items via USPS, and the larger platters go via FedEx. IF YOU DO NOT REQUEST SIGNATURE REQUIRED we are not responsible for packages that go missing AFTER delivery is completed. Please COMMENT or MESSAGE US that you need signature required. I use as much recycled packing material as I can, the boxes are new but the peanuts and bubble wrap are often repurposed, please do the same (or drop them off at your local FedEx/UPS store). I usually ship stock items within 2-5 business days of receiving payment, but please allow up to 7 business days. For made-to-order goods (like knitting needles), please allow an additional 2-3 days.
Refunds and Exchanges
In the rare case that I've sent you a defective product or there is breakage en route to you, I will replace it at my cost immediately. PLEASE TAKE PICTURES AND EMAIL THEM TO ME and save the box - I can't replace anything without this. I'll email you a prepaid label to send the defective item back to me.

If you're not happy with your purchase, please email me within *one week* of receiving your order with your return or exchange preference. In the case of a return, once I receive the product back, I will refund the original purchase price minus shipping and a 10% restock fee.

In the case of an exchange, please send back the original item with your request for the replacement item, and your email address + shipping address. I will email you an invoice for any difference in price and the shipping cost to get the replacement back to you.

When shipping goods back to Kiku, please ship in either original packaging, or packed securely (bubble around product, at least 3-5" of packing peanuts and box - never a bubble envelope). Any breakage en route to me will be the shippers responsibility. I need to receive the item back in my hands within a week after the return is processed on my side, in new and unused condition. During the holidays, if you've ordered between Thanksgiving and Christmas and it's just the wrong darn thing, please email me before New Year's Eve to set up a return/exchange, and mail back to me so I receive it no later than a week after the return is processed (so all December holiday gifts must be back in my hands by the end of the first week in January).

There are no returns on custom or discontinued/sale items, or supplies.
