An Asian Addiction
It all started with a vintage Singer sewing machine back in 1978 when I asked my mother to teach me how to sew. From there I've progressed to becoming a textile collector, designer, teacher, and writer, with several articles in Stitch Magazine.
My focus has been Japanese textiles since 2004, and I opened KimonoMomo in 2005. I've been here on Etsy since 2007, closed the shop in June, 2012, and reopened in December 2012 when I realized I couldn't stay away.
I am often asked "Why Japanese textiles?"
1) Because they are beautiful. Growing up near San Francisco I was exposed to a tremendous amount of Asian art, and my mother was a textile junkie who quilted and collected Japanese fabrics herself. It rubbed off on me.
2) Because they are the best. When I am in Japan I meet artists, designers, textile dyers, and vintage kimono dealers. Everyone has an amazing story to share, and they are all as excited about textiles as I am. The level of quality is so high in Japan that there truly are no bad fabrics, at least in my experience. Silk that is considered "inferior" for domestic use is sent to other countries, where it will become something other than a kimono.
3) Because they last for a century. Japanese silk is produced to an exceptionally high grade, and a kimono custom made for a young woman today is expected to be handed down to her daughter and granddaughter. The silk will last, if properly cared for, which is why I collect so many of them for reuse.

Care instructions
Many of our fabrics are machine wash and dry safe, but not all of them. Please contact us if you need specific details. We suggest cold water and mild detergent.
Can I return an item?
Sometimes, it depends. We do not accept returns on used items, books, and packages that have been opened and handled, such as sewing needles. If you want to discuss a return, please contact us here on Etsy and we'll see what we can do.
Where do you get your items?
Nearly everything we sell is imported from Japan to our shop in the USA. We work directly with Japanese companies large and small to bring you unique and beautiful items, and we love working with small artisan producers in Tokyo, Kyoto, and other cities.
USPS lost my package! What do I do?
Please contact us with your concern and we will file a missing package report with USPS on your behalf. It takes time to locate lost packages, so please understand that while we are doing our best, we cannot find your package and get it to you right away. We have to work with the system just like everybody else. And that takes time!
Gift wrapping and packaging
We are currently working to phase out our non-recyclable packaging one step at a time. Many of our products come to us from Japan already wrapped in plastic, but we are working with some companies to reduce the plastic packaging on products we order from them. It's a gradual process.
