Megan Tucker Illustration

Hello there! As you can see from my shop name, my name is Megan Tucker and i'm an illustrator from Swansea, South Wales in the UK. Im 34 years old and have always loved drawing and generally being creative from as far back as I can remember. Pencils and paper were my "toys" of choice as a child and I would happily spend my time making things out of cardboard boxes, glitter glue and sequins whenever the opportunity arose!

I remember drawing a rainforest scene in school as part of a project at the age of around 4 or 5. My teacher loved it so much, she sent me to the Headmasters office to show it to him and I was then paraded around all of the classrooms to show each teacher what I had done! I still have that drawing and I think it was at that point I realised that I had a skill and a love for drawing things that make people smile.

I studied art and graphic design in school, then took graphic design, art and ceramics at college. After that I took a gap year where I taught art in Texas to homeschooled kids for a few months and applied to go to university the following year. I enrolled at Swansea Metropolitan University in 2005 and studied illustration with the intention of becoming an Art teacher. Unfortunately, I did not complete my degree (lets just say, life got in the way!).

After that, I job hopped between various retail positions and then got a job as a teaching assistant. I enjoyed it so much I decided to study Childcare and achieved my NVQ3 in 2010. Despite really enjoying working with young children in a school setting, I deeply missed illustration. My husband ran a graphic design business and the call to work at home with him on his business while starting my own, pulled me away from TA work and I began pursuing that in 2011.

Initially, with my love of working with Children, I decided to create beautifully illustrated prints and resources with an educational twist. A year or so into this, I decided to create some Welsh language alphabet prints. I had noticed while working in schools that a lot of Welsh resources were outdated, so I decided to try and fill the gap. I was contacted by a Welsh gift retailer shortly after releasing it on Etsy and was asked if I would supply the prints on a wholesale basis.

This was not something I had considered before but I was glad to do it. From there, the demand for the prints from other shops began to increase, as well as a demand for more Welsh language prints for both children and adults. As this side of my business grew, I felt that my child focused business name (Kindy Garden) was restrictive. I needed to have a business name that allowed me to branch out and create whatever I wanted. So in January 2013, I let go of the Kindy Garden name and became simply "Megan Tucker Illustration".

This new found freedom caused my business to more than double in a year and I now have over 55 shops stocking my work across Wales as well as a healthy turn over here on Etsy. I feel very blessed to have this as my full time job. I work from home and have a dedicated studio space here in my house which I love.
