This homemade monster is even cooler in person! I love how cool it looks, feels and just the overall care and skill that went into creating her. I absolutely love it!!

About

How it all started...

Everything in my shop is made by my own two hands...with the help of a sewing machine!

My desire to make monsters was originally inspired by the book “Stupid Sock Creatures” by John Murphy. In 2006, I started making my own quirky creatures using my own worn-out, colorful socks and developed my own style. At first, I made the "sock monsters" just for fun. I would hand stitch them during church as a way to keep my hands busy while listening to the message. The kids at my church were intrigued by what I was doing and I often gave the monsters away to them. The kids' mothers raved about my work and suggested I start selling my creations. One of them told me about Etsy and in 2008 I started my Etsy shop, KiraArts.

I sometimes describe my monsters as “the mutant cousins of sock monkeys”. I recently have begun making plush animals as well, such as dogs, cats, owls, and woodland creatures. Now, I have graduated beyond socks and moved on to sweaters, fleece, and other fabrics. I find joy in turning an unwanted piece of clothing into a lovable companion for someone. The main goal of my work is simply to make people smile!

Due to growing up watching TV shows like Sesame Street and The Muppet Show, the term “monster”, to me, evokes images of fun, friendly, fantastical creatures instead of grotesque, scary ones.

My monsters started out as "sock monsters" inspired by John Murphy's Stupid Sock Creatures book. But my monster-making has since evolved to include other materials besides socks, such as repurposed clothing and fleece remnants. My most popular items are small monsters I call "Nubbins", small, simple, rectangular monsters with no arms. Standard Nubbins typically have two pointy white teeth, two black eyes (usually with one eye bigger than the other), and an applique` shape on its belly (usually a square or heart).
