About

Crochet gifts inspired by nature

Hi, my name is Kat. I'm the owner and "creative mastermind" of KittenCaboodleCo. I crochet and sew unique animal-themed gifts. I'm a full-time research scientist and commute to and from work by bus everyday. I love to craft and find that it's a great outlet for my creativity. Though I enjoy many different types of crafting, working with yarn, felt, fleece and natural products are my passions.

INSPIRATION:
My creative process begins with inspiration from nature. This could be as simple as petting the neighbor's cat in my backyard, or driving through a forest and taking in all the sights and smells. Sometimes the inspiration comes from the person who I'm designing a gift for. For example, I designed and made a Crochet Cheetah Chalk Bag for my brother for Christmas--what better way to combine his love of climbing with his love of cheetahs? When that creative spark hits, I better have a piece of paper and pen ready to sketch it out!

CREATING:
One I've sketched out my design, I have to put the 2-dimensional drawing into a 3-dimensional product. This usually requires a trip to the craft store to pick out the perfect yarn and accessories for the project. I look up photos of the animal and try to match the colors as good as I can (I'm pretty sure I spent 15 minutes looking for the "exact" shade of golden embroidery floss to make the Cheetah eyes). There can be some trial and error as I try to get the yarn to do what I want. The Cheetah Chalk Bag isn't complicated, it's just a bag right? Well, it took me 4 tries and 2 different types of yarn to get the bag shape just right. After that, I had to make the eyes, nose, ears and each individual spot.

FINISHING:
Once all of the pieces are made, I carefully begin the process of placing them onto the product. I take my time to line up the eyes, ears and nose. I usually ask my husband to take a look at this point, to make sure every piece is in it's proper place in regard to the center line. Once satisfied, I'll sew each piece in its final position. If I'm making a hat or a purse, I may sew up a coordinating lining out of an appropriate fabric and attach it to the product. I'll also attach any additional accessories at this point. In the case of the Cheetah Chalk Bag, it has a felt lining, a binding with a loop (to attach to a climbing harness with a carabiner) and a draw cord to keep the chalk from spilling out when not in use. Every product I make has a little piece of my heart stitched into it and I hope that the love shines through each and every one!

I'm always open to suggestions for new creations and custom orders! Feel free to contact me through my shop, Facebook, Instagram or email:

Hat Sizing

To choose the correct crochet hat size, you will need to measure your head circumference.

Use a soft measuring tape (sold at craft stores) or piece of string. Measure around your entire head, placing the tape/string just above your ears and eyebrows, wrapping around the back of your head. I recommend measuring at least twice to make sure you have an accurate measurement. Round up or down to the nearest half-inch.

Alternatively, you can measure the inside circumference of a good-fitting baseball hat, at the base of the hat. Do not include the bill in the measurement.

I have average measurements for different ages listed in the description of my items. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me!
