About

Korau: creative with paper

I worked as a primary school teacher for 14 years. Paper already played a big part in my life back then: I used it to write on, to draw or paint on, as decoration, to read from, and I reworked it into different shapes and forms. Perhaps it was during that time that the seeds were planted which led to my ever-growing fascination for paper. The idea to start decorating items with paper, initially using Decopatch paper, originated back then.
Around 2012-2013 I started feeling more and more unhappy working as a primary school teacher, so I made the decision to quit my job and take a different path in life. Late 2013 someone had the idea of starting a store in Groningen, the Netherlands; a store selling fair fashion and hand-made products by designers who produce on a small scale. I decided to join in and started my own (small) business with my own line of products. That store, Diezijner, now exists. And so does my business: Korau.
It wasn’t easy to decide on a name. I considered many combinations of my own name and paper/ decoration, but there was no instant connection. But then my husband gave me the advice to think of something that had really moved me. Immediately our trip to New-Zealand sprung to mind, and how I was mesmerized by the tree ferns we saw there. After a little googling I ended up with a list of names, including Korau, one of the Maori-names for tree ferns. The connection was instant!
Like a leaf from a fern tree, Korau is unfolding slowly but surely.
During the start-up phase of my business I mainly concentrated on decorating products with paper. Decopatch paper, newspapers, books, magazines, brochures, photos, texts: the possibilities were endless. It had fun to find old items that were somewhat of a fixer-upper, such as secondhand lamps or vases. The paper decorations gave these items a whole new look and made them beautiful again. Decorating items with paper is something I also enjoyed -and still enjoy- doing on assignment.
In the meantime I started taking workshops and courses on creating paper (handmade paper) and I learned to work with wire and paper. This opened whole new worlds for me with endless possibilities that I enthusiastically embraced. Besides old and somewhat what damaged products, nature has also become a big source of inspiration for Korau. My own backyard forms the basis for my nature-inspired products.
Paper and (paper)fibers always take central stage: Korau is creative with paper!
