Kristin Dieng Art

As someone who experienced the agony of constant, unrelenting migraines for many years, existence often felt like an enormous dark blanket of suppression and devastation. Spiritual survival meant protecting and clinging to a tiny spark of light within, believing that the pain would one day stop and I could resume a purposeful, joy-filled life.

On the rare days when I could climb out of bed, I discovered that creating art was the one safe place where I could find relief. It is here that I found a space that nurtures my psychological survival.

I am a person that lives continuously on the border of separate worlds. Spiritually I am Muslim, but culturally I hail from the Midwest. I am white, but my family is black. I am disabled, but I present as healthy. My life is a constant interplay between separate worlds, where I’ve been given admittance into multiple distinct and different spaces.

As an artist I find that I often bring this duality into my artwork, creating two separate styles of colorful stained glass mosaic art. One is focused on nature-themed work, the other complex, repeating Islamic geometric patterns.

As a Muslim, I believe that God has 99 names, each one a manifestation of God’s attributes. It is in experiencing two specific attributes (As-Salam, the Giver of Tranquility and al-Musawwir, the Artist) where I, myself, feel most connected with God’s divine energy. In my artwork I aim to inspire in the viewer these same feelings. In my nature-themed work, I allow myself to be fluid and relaxed, and I attempt to elicit a feeling of inner stillness/peace (As-salam). One might find a similar feeling when walking alone through a light-filled cathedral of green trees. In my more complex geometric work, I focus on precision and detail, often adding in mixed materials, like Czech glass beads and semiprecious stones. Here I am aiming to draw forth a feeling of awe/wonder (al-Musawwir), perhaps such as one might feel when witnessing a rare bee hummingbird.

In recent years I have begun combining the two styles, creating perhaps the closest visual expression of my own whole self, and my spiritual experiences, by creating beaded mandala-filled landscapes. This work is something new, unique and different, and it combines both feelings of tranquility and marvel.

My art is designed to hang both transparent in a window or opaque on a wall. I am passionate about the ways in which light interacts with my designs, as I believe that in communing with light-filled beauty, one connects with the energy of the divine.
