    The story so far

I have been interested in artistic pursuits my whole life, and have always had a inkling for taking things apart and putting them back together. When I was young I used to wire up old switches and light bulbs in my parents basement, blowing fuses and mildly electrocuting myself until I understood what I was doing. I used to build model castles, cars and airplanes; paint figurines, draw pictures, maps, and paint pictures in watercolour and acrylic.

Later on I took apart guitars, bicycles, and anything else I could get my hands on. I refinished them, rewired and improved them while at the same time putting my own personal mark upon them. I am self-taught in almost everything I do, from personal hobbies to music, photography and even my past work as a utilities analyst.

So, when I started smoking a pipe it was only natural for me to be inquisitive about how they work and how they are made, and for me to try my hand at creating some myself. I started making pipes from kits that I bought (thanks Steve, Vermont Freehand!) and then quickly moved on to drilling my own blocks and stems. Since then I have been steadily working to improve my craft, producing about two pipes a week.

I find pipe-making incredibly therapeutic. The hours spent drilling, shaping, staining and fine-tuning go by quickly. It is an immersive experience very much in the moment. It is personally challenging, as any pipe maker will tell you in the beginning there are many mistakes, miscalculations and failed designs. It is not an endeavor to dabble at, as it takes many many hours of practice to hone the skills necessary to make quality pipes.

However, the pursuit of excellence in pipe making, and the example of so many great pipe-makers past and present is a rewarding experience that I cherish.
