I adore MELANIE one of the very best shops on Etsy. Talented seller. I'm addicted. Lucky you to be reading this and to have found her. You will treasure everything you buy from her. She really values her customers, her words. Quality knowledgable seller who honestly sells both fine antiques and gorgeous reproductions that she hand finishes.

Once upon a time...

...when I lived in France, I was out walking one day and came across a very old ruin - a chateau. The chateau walls were still intact but the interior, roof and any decorative elements had long since disappeared. I went home and asked about the chateau, and was told it once belonged to the family of Talaru. On further research I found that this family existed in France right back to Medieval times, and possibly before. The name always stuck in my mind, and when it came time to open my shop on Etsy, it seemed fitting to choose the name 'Talaru' for this online repository of antique French treasures.

Why antique jewelry?

I am sure that at some time in the past, a person was holding a piece of jewelry that I now own, and they were wondering what would become of this piece. Maybe they asked themselves would it last through the decades and centuries, would someone love and appreciate it as much as they did, what would the person (and indeed, the world) be like at that future point in time?

I write this because I often imagine the reverse - who once owned this brooch, this necklace, this pendant? Where did they get it, what did it mean to them. Who is that person in the photo, whose lock of hair has been carefully encased in this sentimental treasure? What was their home like, was it warm outside, did the air smell different? What did they eat and were they happy?

The items of jewelry I sell evoke many questions, and it is for the new owner to create some answers - to add another chapter to the story, so to speak.

I only offer for sale items which I would be happy to own myself. Indeed, there is a lot that does not make it to my shop, and some of these pieces can be seen in the designs I offer at L'Atelier de Talaru, my antique assemblage jewelry shop.

I mainly sell French antique items - I find that the market for French antique jewelry (mainly costume or everyday jewelry) is strong and emerging, so there is an opportunity to make an impact on others through bringing these beautiful adornments to market.

I love France and have a long history of association with the country, from my first visit there in the early 1990s, to living there in the late 1990s. I still manage to get back there every 2nd year or so, and I have many good contacts who offer me their delightful finds to sell in my shop.

So...sit back, think of the past and browse through the online bijouterie of La Comtesse de Talaru.

Welcome to the boutique of La Comtesse de Talaru.

It is a pleasure and a delight to offer you beautiful and interesting antique treasures for your personal collection or for you to create your own heirloom adornments.

A lot of my business comes from designers who re-purpose these old treasures into new wearable jewelry works of art. Look up 'antique assemblage' on Etsy to see some of this wonderful work.

La Comtesse de Talaru also attracts those interested in collecting antique jewlery and decorative arts. I am drawn to high quality, unusual and scare items and love the opportunity to share them with you.

I spend a lot of time visiting auctions, flea markets and dealing with trusted vendors to find inspirational pieces, particularly for jewelry designers.

I have created an exclusive range of recast antique jewelry components - beautiful elements that you can use in your own designs. I offer the best quality recast silver components on Etsy. Please check my policies for usage rights with recast items.

Accepted payment methods

  • Accepts Etsy gift cards
I accept Paypal and Direct Checkout via Etsy. Australian customers can arrange offline payment via direct bank deposit. Just ask me for the bank account details.

I am happy to reserve any item valued at over $100. I require a 20% non-refundable deposit and full payment within 2 months. I am flexible as to the payment terms - you can pay small amounts weekly, or larger amounts monthly. We can discuss your needs at the time.
I use Australia Post to ship your package. They offer TWO ways to send items overseas: as a letter, or as a parcel.

A letter is defined as documents in a standard envelope, or non-documents that will fit in a bubble envelope or CD mailer box no more than 2cm deep. This is the cheapest way for me to send packages overseas, and typically costs around $6.50.

If something will not fit into the above dimensions (ie: most of what I sell) I need to send it as a parcel.

With parcels I have a few options but the most common are:

Economy Air - I use this for packages under $100 value as tracking is not offered with this service. To the USA this typically costs around $14. Typical transit time is 10+ days, depending on destination.

Standard Air Mail - I use this for packages valued $100 or more which offers tracking. This typically costs around $20 to the USA, but more or less to other international destinations. Typical transit time is 6+ days, depending on destination.

You can choose to upgrade to Express International Post if you want your parcel faster, say in under 1 week, but expect to pay around $50-60 for the privilege.

The overriding factor in how I choose a shipping method is what is best for the item you have bought? ie: what ensures it will reach you intact, undamaged and that meets your expectations. Whilst I might be able to put a small glass locket into a bubble envelope, I do not trust the postal services to protect and love your item as much as I do, and I will therefore not risk its safety for the sake of saving $10. If in doubt, I will send something as a parcel to ensure that you get something you can enjoy and cherish for many years to come.

The item listing will state the shipping cost. If I have miscalculated and undercharged you, I will not ask for more money. If I have over charged you by more than $2, I will send you a refund. In this respect I will always act in the buyer's favour.

Items are usually shipped in either a sturdy CD mailer box, or in a box with beanies or bubble wrap to ensure safe arrival to your door. I take great care with my packaging to make sure items are not damaged in transit.

All items ship from Brisbane Australia.

I go to the post office every weekday, and sometimes also on Saturdays when demand requires. From the time you pay for your item, I usually pack within 24 hours and ship the next business day. This ensures your order will arrive as quickly as possible.

If you have an urgent need for your order please get in touch as there are options for expedited shipping to guarantee arrival to most parts of the world within one week. If you check my feedback you will see overwhelming satisfaction from customers on the quick delivery of their purchase.

Once I have packed your item and it has been posted I will send you a shipping notification through Etsy. Typical transit times within Australia are up to one week, though Express Post often guarantees overnight delivery. To the UK/Europe & USA packages generally arrive within 10-14 days. During the festive season, usually most of December, shipping can take longer due to high volumes that the postal services do not seem able to cope with.

Postage prices include careful packing and protection of your precious items. I reserve the right to apply a service fee in my shipping cost in cases where exceptional services are required, such as couriers or fragile items needing more care with packing. These packages require much more work than a standard package.

Shipping options applied to a listing are not negotiable. I only charge actual shipping costs, and more often than not I absorb a few dollars of the charge myself. I do not charge for packaging or gift wrap/cards but will happily wrap and tag a parcel if you want it as a gift for someone.
Refunds and Exchanges
Customer satisfaction is my primary focus. If the item you purchased does not match the description in the listing or is defective in any way other than any faults described in the listing, and you do not wish to keep it, I will refund your money upon the safe return of the item, and if it is in the same condition it was when I sent it to you.

Any items that you want to return for this reason must be notified to me within 7 days of receiving them. If you hold the item for any longer I assume that you have used and 'enjoyed' the item(s) and it is considered a case of 'change of mind', which I do not refund for.

I do not refund original or return shipping fees. Any refund due will not be paid until the item has been returned to me in a satisfactory condition, as it was when I shipped it to you.

In general, repairs in lieu of refund are not viable or practical, and my policy is to offer a full refund even if you think an item can be repaired. If you want to repair ti, you need to keep it.

Other than the above, all sales are final and if you change your mind or did not read the item description, I cannot offer a refund. I will readily and accurately answer any questions you have prior to purchase, so please make contact WITH me should you need clarification on any details.

I research the items I sell and where possible and practical verify any pertinent facts that might affect your purchase decision. I will never describe anything as antique or vintage if I know it is not so. If I have doubts about any item, I will either remove it from my store or not list it in the first place.

The photographs and the text constitute the full description of the item. Any information provided in Etsy convo adds to this body of information.

I have many years experience dealing in antique French and religious jewelry - I hope therefore that I or my trusted suppliers can discover the answers to any questions you might have about the item you are interested in, either before or after the purchase.

I will always present a detailed description in each listing to the best of my knowledge, and if any item has what might reasonably be deemed as flaws, marks or faults, I will describe them accurately. I am always happy to supply more photos or information if you feel you need it. Just send me a convo request and I'll be happy to oblige.

Do bear in mind that the majority of the items I sell are vintage or antique - some can be up to 400 years old. Normal wear and tear are to be expected, and indeed can be seen as a feature of an antique item.
Additional policies and FAQs
My recast components are offered for sale on the basis that you will use them in your own designs for personal use or sale. Purchase of these components does not confer rights to reproduce these elements. I offer reasonable prices for high quality reproductions so you can afford to purchase as many pieces as you need for your design activities. Many of my recast pieces are hand created by me - just as if I painted a work of art. Please respect my originality and do not copy my components. I do offer wholesale prices for quantities of 10 or more recast pieces - I am happy to provide this pricing should you wish for a bulk purchase.
