Beautiful piece of jewelry. The Fine Silver is great. The chainmaille work is impressive. Shipped quickly and arrived nicely packaged.

Welcome to New Byzantium Designs!

For nearly 1000 years, Byzantium, the Byzantine Empire, had Constantinople (now Istanbul) as its capitol and was a major crossroads of trade, ideas, and culture.

We are living in a new Byzantium. The computer and e-commerce let us purchase goods from all over the world. Art is shared. Designs fuse and/or recombine. Cultures are sampled. The old meets up with the new. I like to think that my work in metal jewelry reflects these realities.

I employ chain maille weaves, once used only for armor, to make adornment instead. I use forging and shaping techniques that have been around since people first made things out of metal – I also use tools like the butane and propane torch, the hydraulic press, the rolling mill, the flex-shaft, and the copy machine. A few of my pieces are soldered, but I use no glue or adhesives.

I use materials (silver, copper and brass) which were known in Byzantium as well as new materials (gold-filled, stainless steel, niobium, aluminum, metal clay, and neoprene) which Byzantium never dreamed of. I use no plated metal, nor do I use nickel “silver.”
I will identify all metals in my product descriptions, as well as any beads or stones used for embellishment, and clearly state whether any components are not crafted by me. (e.g. clasps, fine chain for pendants.)

Convo me at any time. I am open to making a piece in a different metal, changing out a clasp, changing a size, or conforming to any other special need. Some changes can be made to the item being offered – other changes may require me to create a new piece as a Custom Order.

A note on pricing: I use the best material I can find for any given piece. My silver is either fine silver (.999) when a piece calls for fusing, or sterling silver (.925 alloyed with either copper or germanium.) My copper is solid copper. My steel is stainless, my niobium is anodized, and my brass, aluminum, and neoprene are what they are. My pieces are priced based on the metal and embellishments used, the intricacy of the design, and the complexity of the fabrication techniques needed.

Be assured that “good enough” is NEVER good enough for the pieces I offer in my shop.

Additional policies and FAQs
***Custom Orders***

These orders are arranged by convo. Any custom pieces must be paid for in advance. Once the details are worked out, I will create a custom listing for you. I will not begin any custom work until the invoice is paid. Please allow up to two weeks for shipment of all custom work.

***SIZING***

Please note that my BRACELETS are meant to fit loosely around the wrist. Sizing is based on the circumference around the widest part of the hand.

Many bracelets are easily resized. – either by adjusting the length of the bracelet itself or by changing out the clasp. Others (certain chain maille weaves, and most loop-in-loop chains) do not lend themselves to adjustment, so a different size would have to be purchased through a Custom Order.

NECKLACE lengths vary and are noted in the description. Some lengths may not be adjustable, other than in a minor way as in changing out a clasp. Please convo about sizing before payment is made as extra length may require an additional cost.

RING sizes are expressed in U.S. sizing. Most rings are available as custom orders. At this time, Turk’s Head are not available for Custom Order.

***Oxidation***

"Bright” pieces other than Gold-filled can be oxidized upon request. Oxidized pieces may be Custom Ordered as “bright” pieces.
