Announcement   Welcome to my Etsy Shop where I sell hand dyed thread, hand tatted items and beaded jewelry for apparel and decoration and new to the shop is Barbie clothes. Tatting, crochet and knitting are all favorites of mine.

Tatting is an ancient art. No one knows for sure where it started. Some say that the European fishermen used the knots to make jewelry for their sweethearts and that was how it began.

Pictures of tatting have been discovered on ancient Egyptian carvings, and Queen Elizabeth the First enjoyed tatting. Wherever it began, it has always had devoted followers who enjoy making the little knots and creating works of art with them.

Hundreds of tiny half-hitch knots go into a large tatted piece. Tatting is as compulsive as kntting or crochet - it is just a different facet of needle craft. I enjoy them all.

I have sister Etsy Shops where I sell my original knitting and crochet patterns. You're welcome to visit me there too.

http://www.ozarknomad.etsy.com for knitting and crochet patterns, especially for your furry friends

http://www.tonisdollhouse.etsy.com for Rescued dolls, doll clothing, and doll repaints.

The Needle Tatted Jewelry will be shipped by Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation. You will be able to track your package while it is on its way to you. Often your needle tatted jewelry is One of a Kind, and not easily replaced. You will know where your package is at all times, and I will know that it has been safely delivered.

You can also choose the much less expensive option of USPS regular delivery mail, First Class. It is only $3.00 for most small items. That is with no guarantees and no delivery confirmation. I will accept that option if you have a PO Box where your mail is secure. Otherwise, I can't control what happens if your neighbors have access to your mailbox. It has happened. The Priority Mail delivery system with delivery confirmation protects us both. Contact me by Etsy messaging system if you would prefer the $3.00 option, realizing that there are no guarantees.

Thanks for stopping by!

I just love these colors. They are even more vibrant in person. I crochet and knit and am starting to learn tatting. I wanted to get some fun colors and these are perfect. Hopefully soon I will have some fun pictures to share. Very good quality thread, super fast shipping and an excellent seller. Highly recommend!

About

An Ancient Craft in Modern Times - Tatting

About 2000 years ago, fishermen used a large shuttle to weave heavy cord into fishing nets. About 1000 years ago sailors knew many different kinds of knots to use on the sailing ships. The Bolin Knot was used for the anchor; it was a slip stitch. All these cords were handed down to weavers who used a finer thread to make lace. The shuttle was smaller to accommodate this finer thread and the lace they made was sewn onto satin and velvet. Because the royalty wore beautiful garments with lace, lace making was a thriving business in Europe.

Tatting was one of these laces. Children and handmaidens were taught to tat edgings that were quickly bought up by the weavers who would add the tatting edgings onto the garments and charge a large sum of money for the garment.

TATTING EDGINGS

In England, this lace was called knotting. In France it was called frivolet. In America it was called tatting. In 1845 in Cork, Ireland the nuns had developed the art of lace making with crochet, knitting, and tatting. They saw the poor people eating grass so they brought out their beautiful laces, sold them, and gave the money to the poor. Irish immigrants came to America wearing tatting, and then they sold the tatting to make pin money.

My Grandmother Hazel taught me to tat with a shuttle, and I still have the shuttle she used to teach me. That was over 60 years ago. Now I use both a shuttle and the tatting needle to create jewelry, and dye my own thread to use and sell.

I like small projects that are easy to take along. I can carry my tatting needles, a small spool of thread, and scissors in an eyeglass case.

Feel free to browse the shop and if you have any questions or special needs just let me know. Thanks for visiting, and have a wonderful day.
