My Story

Born in Finland I grew up close to nature. In the little town of Kuusankoski there was nature all around me. Forest was my favorite place to play as a child and as I grew up I often went on walks there. I also found it a very pleasant place to contemplate about life. On one of these walks I had the first spiritual experience that I clearly remember. After that both nature and the spiritual side of life has been inspiration for my art work. My work consists of acrylic paintings, drawings, linoleum and woodblock prints, jewelry and digital photography. I like my art to be positive, uplifting and promote peace.

I have been fascinated with mandala images for as long as I remember. The word “mandala” comes from Sanskrit meaning “circle.” The circle has been a symbol of unity and wholeness in most cultures. It has also been used as an aid to create sacred spaces and as an aid in meditation. The thought that the visible world and the invisible world meet at the center point of the mandala is especially fascinating to me. In addition to my mandala paintings, I find digital art especially well-suited for the concept and love creating my Nature Mandalas in Photoshop from my photographs.

My Nature Alphabets started as a project of inspiration letters. Each day I found a letter in nature and picked an artsy word that started with the letter and quote that went along with it. On the 26th day, I had completed my first nature alphabet from my images of different plants. Since then, I have created several sets of alphabets based on my photographs. On my trip to Silver Lake Sand Dunes on Lake Michigan, I was fascinated by the designs the wind had made in the sand. Later at home, I found a whole alphabet in the images I had shot and my second alphabet was born. My third alphabet is my Forest Alphabet. I found these letters in the Eberwhite Woods in Ann Arbor, MI.

I am working on a series of peace dove art called Tribute to the Boston Marathon 2913. In 2013 I went to Boston to watch my daughter run the marathon. What was supposed to be a day of celebration turned to a very, very sad day as we all know. I came back home broken-hearted. As part of my healing, I decided to do a series of paintings, drawings, prints, jewelry etc. of my favorite subject, the peace dove. The pieces are not about running, but about peace. Their message is love, hope, joy and some of them are just for fun. I will make 117 pieces, one for each year of the Boston Marathon until the year 2013.

I have to admit it is hard for me to stick to one style of painting. You may find on my site a variety of different styles and subject matter - I love them all.
All the artwork on my site is done by me with the exception of “My Peace Dove” and “Tiny Dove” jewelry which I designed and made the first prototype. I am having them cast by RaceCar Jewelry, 19 Mendon Ave, Pawtucket, RI 02861.
I was fortunate to study drawing, painting and print making at the Art Students League of New York in NYC. I have lots of fond memories from that school. I currently live in Ann Arbor, MI with my husband Tom and two cats, Ricky and Lucy.
