i start the magical process of wet felting with a water bottle of hot water, soap and beautiful soft merino fibres -

i create my desired shape with layers of thin tuffs of wool... -

then saturate with warm soapy water... -

and agitate using multiple methods - isla loves to helps at this stage of the process!
sculpting with wool
i guess you could say that i became a "fibre purist" once i had kids & got concerned about what they were wearing against their sensitive little bodies. so many of their hand-me-down hats were polyester fleece and even on the coldest days i'd remove their toques to find their heads sweaty & static-y. so i went on a mission to create a functional, natural, light-weight hat that covered their necks, stayed on (!), & looked cute. wool is a super fibre! merino wool in particular has amazing qualities that i wanted to harness in my ideal hat.
a friend had showed me how to wet-felt wool fibres a few years back & i fell in love with the process and wondered if i could create something 3-dimensional using the same technique. my experiment resulted in a misshapen cone-like shape & felt like a first-attempt fail :) but i poked at it, stuck it over a ball, felted it some more, put in some folds & a curl... there is absolutely nothing like the process of adaptation & it brought me to a place i would not have otherwise discovered. the felt elf hood was born! i added a few embellishments & velcro for the chin strap & voila, my little one wore it with no fuss, sweat or static! i thought that was the end, but then people started to comment & request - some strangers even gave me their card & asked to sell them in their store... i was delighted because the hat was such a happy mistake : )
