About

City Lights Antique Lighting what's so hard about that?

After graduating high school in 1967 I promptly began looking for a job that would lead to a career. I tired architectural drafting, house painting, model making, and sang in a blues band. But the job that proved to have the most lasting effect was unloading household donations from trucks at Morgan Memorials. No, I did not become a furniture mover. It was being around all that cool old stuff that inspired me. I bought things from the Goodwill store amassing an apartment filled with wonderful junk. In time I had to thin the herd and would up-market it selling at antique shows. Even though this proved lucrative, it was too much fun for me to consider as a career. So I kept looking for a “real job” trying on for size all the aforementioned skills while haunting flea markets on Sunday and filling my apartment with even more jetsam of the industrial age.

Around 1973 I was selling at the Cyclorama Antique show in Boston and had on display a few floor lamps. Everyone would ask, “Do they work?” I said they do not but they are easy to rewire. It was then I discovered how many people are afraid of electricity. Succumbing to the market demands, I later rewired them. At the next show I proudly declared that they all worked and promptly they all sold. From then on buying and rewiring lighting became the focus of my antique selling. In 1975, I rented a shop, filled it with thirty odd working lamps, and named the shop City Lights. By 2013 when I closed the store City Lights bulged with over 500 lamps, sconces, and chandeliers. Today I continue to restore and sell vintage lighting on line.

What I like about light and lighting are the various effects it creates and the emotional states it invokes. Reflected light to back light, focused to diffused, overhead, side and the Halloween eerie up from the bottom, light and its carnival of effects fascinates me.
