FAQ ~ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

CAN I SWITCH OR ALTER QUOTE PAGES?
(i.e. "I like this journal but would prefer a different quote page.")
No, unfortunately, I cannot replace or alter a quote page once it is bound into a journal. I print off the quote page prior to binding it into the journal. My books are permanent bindings, so once they're bound, their pages cannot be altered. If you like a journal but would rather not have the quote page, I can remove it without damaging the book - simply put this in the 'notes' section upon checkout.

WHAT KIND OF PAPER DO YOU USE?
Unlined, white 28-lb. paper, Forest Stewardship Council Certified (unless otherwise mentioned in the listing, i.e. some of my guestbooks utilize sketch paper instead). This paper does not have ‘tooth’; it is smooth and creamy feeling. The paper is acid-free and archival.
● Standard-sized journals (5½”x4¼”): Every page is painstakingly hand-torn from its original A4 size... therefore, one side of the page will be hand-torn and the rest will be a regular edge; I randomize the torn sides so that the tears look somewhat consistent throughout, giving the book pages a 'ragged' look overall. It is time-consuming to achieve, but the look is unique and pleasing.
● 9"x6" books: The pages are not hand-torn and have regular edges.

WHAT BINDING IS USED ON YOUR JOURNALS?
The bind is a variation of longstitch and it is carefully stitched by hand. This is an old-world, hearty binding that dates back to the 14th century, Germany. Every journal I make opens flat, so you can write all the way into the margins, without breaking the spine.

WHAT KIND OF LEATHER DO YOU USE?
I use top-grain cowhide, unless otherwise mentioned in the listing.

DO YOU ACCEPT CUSTOM ORDERS?
No, sorry - not at this time. Only my ready-made journals are available for purchase. I still do engraving of purchased journals, as well as the "add a back pocket" option - both are located in the "Customization Options" section of my shop.
Engraving (freehand): http://etsy.me/1NCcyZr
Add Back Pocket: http://etsy.me/1NCcnNI

CAN I GET LINED PAGES IN MY JOURNAL?
No, sorry. I am not creating custom journals at this time, so only ready-made journals with unlined pages are available in my shop.

HOW DO I TIE MY JOURNAL'S STRAP INTO A KNOT?
If you have a leather strap closure on your journal, and wish to tie the strap in a knot like in some of my product photos, I have recorded a quick tutorial here: http://youtu.be/X1mMsnDQNzI

HOW DOES YOUR REFILL SERVICE WORK?
So... you've written your last page in your favourite La Paperie & Cozy journal; it is completely full. Quelle nightmare! Now what? No need to panic! Purchase my refill service. Simply select the size you require.

WHAT ARE YOUR SHIPPING POLICIES?
Please read them here: http://etsy.com/shop/lapaperie/policy
A purchase from my shop is a binding agreement to these policies, so it is your responsibility to become familiar with them. As a general rule, minimum shipping time within Canada and the USA is 10-16 business days, unless upgrade is purchased. That is not counting any unforeseen delays at customs for non-domestic shipments (unfortunately, beyond our control).

MY ORDER IS TIME SENSITIVE…WILL IT REACH ME IN TIME?
While I would love to offer guarantees, unfortunately, I cannot and will not promise your package will reach you by a specific date. Realistically speaking, we all know that postal systems and customs are fickle; this is beyond our control, unfortunately. CanadaPost gives us *estimates only* on delivery times. While unlikely, there is always a chance that packages can be held up at customs, regardless of the mode of shipping. Such is the risk of shipping, especially across borders. The standard method of shipping I use is economical, but does not include an on-time guaranteed delivery date. Please contact me if you're interested in upgrading for faster shipping. It is up to YOU to decide if you feel it will make it to you on time, based on the estimated delivery times that I am quoted by the postal system. For more info, please read the above shipping policies and my Shop Policies at ---> http://etsy.com/shop/lapaperie/policy

WHY BUY A HANDMADE JOURNAL, WHEN I CAN PURCHASE A CHEAP ONE AT ANY STATIONERY OR BIG-BOX STORE?
Mass-produced books do have their place, but a handmade journal is special. Each book is unique, one-of-a-kind, and handmade with care, by me. My journals are completely handmade, and as such, are not without their flaws... and quite honestly, therein lies the charm of a handmade item. I hand-cut the leather, hand-tear the paper, and hand-stitch the bindings. I'm certainly not as accurate as a machine, so there may be slight inconsistencies in each piece. If you want a perfect machine made book there are plenty out there. However, each of my books is unique and carefully hand-crafted with love, the way they were hundreds of years ago! You can be assured NO ONE else has a journal exactly like it - that’s something to write home about (or in your journal)!

ABOUT THE LEATHER
Please keep in mind that leather is a natural material and each piece is different, even from the same hide. Actual colours may vary slightly from the colours on your screen, due to monitor colour variances. Over time, leather will accumulate marks, scratches, and even darken in colour with everyday wear & tear - this only adds to the leather's beauty. Also please note that leather will sustain water damage if left in a damp environment as it is not treated to be waterproof.

About

Unique journal designs, perfect for the enthusiastic literati.

La Paperie & Cozy Handmade Journals® is a one-woman bookbinding venture, creating quality leather journals, sketchbooks, and guestbooks that are handmade using centuries-old craftsmanship. All of the leather is hand-cut, all of the bindings are hand-stitched, and the paper is hand-torn... the old fashioned way.

Home of the original "quoted journal", my work pays homage to favourite authors and classic literary greats, with many journals featuring quotes on the first page of the book.

The leather is a treat to hold in your hands. With each journal I try to preserve and incorporate the brand marks, textures, naturally-formed holes, raw edges and idiosyncrasies of the leather, along with the journal's design. This is to emphasize and accentuate how unique each piece is – no two are ever the same. I also incorporate many unique journal designs and closures that you will not find anywhere else, thus, guaranteeing a unique journal every time. Perfect for the enthusiastic literati!

{ A B O U T }

I'm the self-taught bookbinder behind La Paperie & Cozy. Home, for me, has always been a small coastal town on the east coast of Canada.

As a child, I loved journals and filled them with writing almost as quickly as I collected them - I'm happy to say it is something I've never outgrown. Today, as an avid writer and sketcher, making my own books was a natural 'next step,' you could say. I initially started making books for myself as a hobby in early 2007. I discovered Etsy at that time and loved the 'handmade online community' that it offered. In November 2007 – after leaving my part-time job as front office manager at a small newspaper office – I established La Paperie & Cozy Handmade Journals, my bookbinding venture that I am proud to call my own.

Bookbinding/Book Arts is quite possibly the most *perfect* creative outlet for me, as it combines three of my passions: books, writing and artistic design.

The creative freedom that my work allows is something I hold dear. I enjoy creating new book designs and pairing them with favourite quotes. I love the actual binding process; I find it very soothing... almost therapeutic. All my books - journals, sketchbooks, guestbooks - are handmade using centuries-old craftsmanship. Home of the original "quoted journal" (quotes on the title page), my work pays homage to favourite authors and classic literary greats coupled with many unique journal designs.

I lovingly gift wrap all my books by hand before sending each on their journey, whether it be down the street or to the other side of the world. Each book is imbued with a little bit of myself... it is an amazing feeling to be able to share that with others across the globe!

Shop policies

Last updated on November 10, 2015
A purchase from my shop is a binding agreement to the policies below.

To avoid disappointment and misunderstanding, please become familiar with these policies PRIOR to purchase (especially regarding shipping)... and feel free to ask questions at any time! It is always best to ask questions about the products PRIOR to purchase.

I am sorry for the necessity of these stringent policies. Therefore, you must PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Accepted payment methods

Payment
I only accept PayPal payment - it is safe and secure! Through Paypal, you can also pay with credit card, bank transfer and eCheck (item will ship when eChecks clear). Items will not ship unless full payment is received.
Shipping
All shipped packages from my shop will now include tracking and insurance. However, on-time delivery is not guaranteed. Delivery times are *estimations* only, and do not include possible delays at customs. Please contact me for rates that include faster/guaranteed on-time delivery such as with Xpresspost or Priority - an invoice for additional shipping costs will be sent to you via Paypal, and your package will ship when all fees are paid.

ESTIMATED DELIVERY TIMES (exclude weekends & holidays):
► CANADA: Expedited – approx. 8-12 business days
► USA: Tracked Packet – approx. 10-16 business days
► INTERNATIONAL: Tracked Packet Int’l – approx. 14-18 business days

DELAYS : Please note that I cannot control the delivery time due to customs regulations, so please wait patiently. On-time delivery on any package is not guaranteed due to the fact that random custom checks and hold-ups can delay a package going across borders; this is beyond my control. I cannot be held responsible or refund your purchase price should your journal be delayed for any reason while in transit. The best I have to work with are estimates given to me by CanadaPost. If you have purchased upgraded shipping (Xpresspost/Priority) and your package doesn't arrive within the estimated time, a refund of the upgraded shipping fee (minus Airmail rate) will be refunded once I file an insurance claim and CanadaPost agrees to issue a refund.

ADDRESS: Ensure that this address is correct, as I cannot be held responsible for packages that don't make it to you due to an incorrect address. You will be responsible for shipping fees to re-ship it to you, should the package be returned to me due to incorrect address.

GIFTS: If the item you've purchased is going to a third party, mention this in "notes" when checking out, and confirm the ship-to address. Request if you would like me to enclose a small complimentary gift note along with the book from you (a short note from you, so the person knows who they're receiving the gift from). All of my books come wrapped and ready to give as gifts, with no receipt enclosed.

LOST: If an item is thought lost, contact will be made with the postal system - proof that the package was not received will be investigated by the postal service, prior to an insurance claim being filed. An item is not deemed 'officially lost' in the post until 45 business days have passed; I will fully refund OR replace (if possible) a lost item.
Refunds and Exchanges
I want you to be completely happy with your order and am confident you will be. If not, your item can be returned, for replacement or refund. Item must be in original unused condition when returned, or else refund or replacement will not be given. Return shipping is your responsibility - it is best to insure the item for its purchase value when returning it, as no refunds will be given if item is lost in the mail.

Sorry, I do NOT accept returns for customized journals, which includes journals that are engraved. If you have a question about an item, please ask me *prior* to purchasing it and having it engraved. Once it's engraved, it's YOURS.

Please see above "Shipping Info" for details on lost or delayed items.
Additional policies and FAQs
I hand-cut the leather, hand-tear the paper, and hand-stitch the books. I'm certainly not as accurate as a machine, and there may slight inconsistencies or some things may be a bit uneven here or there... but each of my books is unique and carefully hand-crafted with love! :)

Please keep in mind that leather is a natural material and each piece is different. Actual colour may vary slightly from the colour on your screen due to monitor color restrictions. I use cowhide, unless otherwise stated in the listing.

Whenever possible, I re-use decent shipping materials. Please do your part to reduce waste!
