All metals patina over time, it is a chemical reaction that occurs when metal is exposed to air. This oxidation is accelerated with exposure to harsh chemicals such as chlorine, perfume, hair spray, lotion, sunscreen and salt water.
This patina is a film that coats the metal to protect itself from further oxidation. Care and maintenance is needed to preserve the luster of metal.
Once a piece begins to oxidize a good polishing will restore its luster. I use and recommend Moonshine Polishing Cloths. These ultra gentle non abrasive specially treated jewelers cloths are amazing and available right here on Etsy :) Once a piece has been cleaned and polished care should be taken not to expose it to harsh chemicals or salt water, as it will begin to oxidize again. Storing jewelry in a special box or wrapped in cloth slows the oxidation from air.
