Garden Variety Pottery

Washington, D.C. 3 Sales On Etsy since 2012

Announcement   As a potter, my job is to create handmade objects that renew an everyday appreciation of the work we all do with our hands, from pouring tea or rinsing berries, to serving a meal to family and friends. I work to create pottery that will encourage the sharing of stories, food and experiences, and to open up the kinds of spaces—inside a soup bowl, around a dinner table, cupped in your hands—that build healthy and robust communities. And try not to burn down the kiln shed along the way.

All my pots are hand-thrown on the wheel and fired either in the gas kiln at Hinckley Pottery in Washington, DC or in the woodfire kiln at Tye River Pottery in Amherst, VA. All are safe for the dishwasher, oven, and microwave.

About

A Community of Fire

Some years ago, I found that I was just a ten minute walk from an incredible studio in DC, Hinckley Pottery. I was enrolled in class the same day, and working in the studio recycling clay and firing kilns three months later. Most recently, I started learning to mix the glazes and work as an apprentice teacher for community classes.

The process of making pots has always been as important to me as the end result. In the fall of 2009 I traveled to Amherst, VA to learn about wood firing from Kevin Crowe at Tye River Pottery, and now I fire my work there as a member of his crew twice a year. When we're firing, we're up around the clock working in shifts of two, stoking the kiln with wood every fifteen minutes for about a week. This long and slow process leaves trails of flame and ash across the surface of the pots, and forges incredible friendships.

I hope that sharing a meal from these bowls and platters, or drinking your coffee in the morning from one of my cups will bring you together with family and friends, having just as much fun as I did in making them!

I started making pottery four years ago. I do my best to create pots that awaken an appreciation of the everyday things we do with them. I hope you enjoy!

Payment
I accept personal checks and PayPal. I'm on the waiting list for Etsy's credit card checkout option, to be added soon.
Shipping
I will send these pots via USPS priority mail or UPS, so they arrive safely. It should take about a week to two weeks for people in the US. I'll send them promptly after receiving payment (so if you send a check, I'll send them once I get it in the mail).
Refunds and Exchanges
We're in this together.
If your piece arrives broken, I'll give you a full refund. Just email me a photo.

If you prefer, I will replace the piece with one just like it, as long as it wasn't a unique or very rare firing result. In this case I suggest we split the shipping to send you the replacement.

If you feel like the piece wasn't what you expected, or isn't to your liking for any reason, you can send it back within a month. In this case your refund will be the amount you paid, minus what I actually spent shipping it to you, and minus the fee Etsy charged me for the sale (in other words, I'll give you back all the money I would have earned on the sale). You'll handle return shipping cost.
Additional policies and FAQs
I do offer custom orders. If you see something you like, but you're interested in a different color, size, or a matching set of them, feel free to reach out by email.
