5 out of 5 starsI had Leah do this portrait of my mom's dog as a surprise - she totally nailed every aspect of this wonderful dog--so much so that it brought tears to my mom's eyes. The depth and detail of the portrait is amazing and I can't wait to have her do one of my dog as well. This is real talent!!

Snapshot to Fine Art: Hand Painted Portraits
Art is a constant and central part of my life — I paint almost every day in my home studio in Boston, Massachusetts. Over the past 12 years I've worked professionally as an artist, perfecting my techniques as a painter and portrait artist. Process, concentration and the desire to create highly detailed paintings grant me the focus needed to create unique, timeless portraits every time I sit down at my easel.
Commissioning an artist to paint a portrait of someone special to you can be daunting — there are many portrait artists to choose from, each with their own style, level of professionalism, and creative process. It’s important for you, the customer, to find a style and price range right for you. That said, there are very few artists who create portraits with the same attention to detail that I dedicate to each of my portraits, moving the finished product from art to fine art. Hours are spent on each portrait building layers of paint. In my pet portraits, the building of these layers allows me to form different textures from the soft undercoat to the fine little hairs at the surface. In portraits of people, layers build to create the natural luminous qualities of skin. I want to capture the expression, the twinkle in the eye, that special something that makes each subject distinctly "them". I care deeply about the subjects that I paint — it’s as if I create a bond to that animal or person, because, for a month or more, I have pored over their image recreating their character and life force within my painting.
Thank you for taking the time to view my galleries and read about me and my work!

Frequently asked questions
Sizing details
Every painting and drawing is completely customizable. Don't let the listed sizes limit your creativity or desire! Want a long and narrow portrait? That's ok! Want an oval or hexagon? Cool! Just shoot me a note and let me know what size you were thinking of and I'll be happy to give you a quote!
Multiple subjects
If you have more than one pet, or you'd like to be in the portrait with your pet, I'd be more than happy to include multiple subjects within the same portrait. However, to maintain quality and the level of details I strive for, multiple subjects work best on medium and larger sized portraits. Please check out the Multiple Subjects section of my shop. Sometimes it's best to have a conversation about your options prior to making your selection and purchase. Don't hesitate to write me a note, attaching your photos so I can give my best advice.
Adding a background
My personal preference is to keep things as simple as possible to allow your pet to shine! I prefer to have a solid color as the background - you can choose your favorite color or leave it up to me to pick one that will compliment your pet.
Sometimes a background is vital to expressing the full personality of your pet or to create a certain mood. I'd be happy to recreate the surroundings of your pet to your liking with the accompaniment of reference photos. Please check out the Portraits with Backgrounds section of my shop.
Working from photographs
The quality of the photographs you supply me greatly affect the outcome and quality of your finished portrait. It is very important to send me photographs that exhibit great detail and focus. I always suggest sending a few photographs so I may get an understanding of your pet's personality and character and so I am able to see the different colors and texture of their fur. All these subtleties will make the portrait unique to your pet.
Gift certificates
Sometimes it can be hard to surprise someone with a custom portrait - getting the right photo, sneaking shots of their pet to send me. Giving a gift certificate is the way to go! Not only will your friend be able to choose their favorite photo of their pet, but they will also have the unique and exciting experience of commissioning a custom portrait.
Gift certificates come in any denomination, or you can purchase them by size of the portrait. I offer certificates printed in a notecard with envelope, or digital for gifting last minute.
Shipping Extra Large & Oversized Paintings
Shipping artwork in general is not cheap. Once artwork reaches a certain size and weight (which extra large paintings do), it must be shipped by UPS Freight, as it can no longer go by ground. Therefore shipping *starts* at $700. If shipping ends up costing more than that, I will need to send you an extra bill for the remaining balance. I hate that it has be that way, but I have not been able to do it for anything less (Fedex was even more costly).
