Face Masks that are unique and functional & Classy, Stylish Plarn bags that are durable and pretty

Since I was set to retire from my bookkeeping day job January of 2021, I started this Etsy store at the beginning of 2020 as part of my retirement plan. I loved the idea of upcycling and turned my brain power to crafting a way to add class to the new trend of cutting up plastic shopping bags to make yarn that can be used to create all kinds of neat, usable and durable items. I started out making wine gift bags because that seemed pretty easy. I soon graduated to making purses once I figured out a viable way to add zippers and lining. I gave several away as gifts and with much feedback from friends to hone my design, Butterfly Bags Studio was born.

I figured I’d “dabble’ on my store for a year, learning the Etsy system, and then get more serious in it by the end of 2020. Little did I know, my plans would change drastically March of 2020. When folks started getting sick all over the world, a friend sent me a Facebook post that seamstresses were starting to sew fabric masks to help alleviate the shortage in supplies. It made sense to me to jump in and help. I started sewing masks for friends I knew in Police departments where masks were unavailable, veterinary clinics who had given their N95 masks to the human hospital system and now had trouble getting regular surgical supplies for their animal needs, and friends who work at homeless shelters in my city. Some friends contacted me wanting to purchase masks made from my design, so I added them to my Etsy store. By the end of March 2020, my store had earned a “Best Seller” rating and I was often so overwhelmed with orders that I couldn’t find time to sew for my donations. I started taking my listing down on the weekends to get caught up. By the writing of this story in mid-April, I have sewn over 300 masks. About 200 of these have been donated in my local community and the other 100 have been shipped to 46 states, including Alaska & Hawaii.

I am very grateful to my wonderful Etsy customers for their extreme patience during these difficult times. I well know every one of them is anxious so I do my best to process orders quickly and get them shipped out. My dear husband jumped in to help me by cutting fabric and twisting pipe cleaners so I could concentrate on sewing. Since our gym had to close, he actually liked getting in some needed exercise each day by cycling to the post office, sometimes twice, to get my orders on their way. My son and brother joined the team in April and we added custom embroidery.

I will probably keep the Masks in my inventory but I am very much looking forward to getting back to creating fine crafted bags using the Plarn.

Thank you for patronizing my Etsy store,
~Lea

October 2020 update: We are still making facemasks and have learned much from our great customer feedback. We now offer several features and style selections to meet the need of sore ears, eye glass fogging, and persons who have difficulty breathing in these necessary face coverings. Our special 3D Framed design has inner boning to hold the fabric away from the mouth area and helps prevent mask acne and helps folks with PTSD and asthma breath more normally.

We are adding back in our unique upcycled Plarn creations just in time for Holiday giving.
