Video summary: This short video shares the inspiration for Legacy Violets.

How did Legacy Violets begin?

As is not uncommon for people who finds themselves in a "plant based-endeavor", my love for plants started when I was young, helping in the garden and flower beds and experimenting with ways to grow trees faster using my chemistry set (when that was a thing). This eventually led to me building a small greenhouse business (in the shadows of the Ford Rouge Plant) that sold herbs and provided work experience opportunities for local youth.

Fast forwarding to today, my plant world is more appropriately scaled for this stage of life, focusing on only miniature and semi-miniature African violets, and bonsai for fun. Although most of my plants are vegetatively propagated, which is essential for chimeras and some others, I also venture into tissue culture propagation (because I'm a science nerd). Two of the best things about miniatures and semi-miniatures is that 1) they take up less space you so you have more plants, and 2) there seems to be a never ending supply of new varieties to explore.

I enjoy providing my customers high quality plants, great service and helpful information. Thanks for visiting!

Frequently asked questions
Do you combine items for shipping?

Yes. Leaf cuttings and starter plants will be combined into one shipment.

If you order only leaf cuttings we can pack up to 5 sets of leaves in our standard box (7.95 shipping); if more than 5 sets the next size larger box must be used (9.95 shipping) to provide sufficient insulation. If you are charged 9.95 shipping for 5 leaves or less I'll refund the 2.00.

If your order more than 5 plants we may ship a larger box but at no additional cost to you.

Shipping by UPS will be charged at our actual cost and we will let you know by email the final total. You may request expedited shipping such as next day and that would also be charged at our actual cost.

How long will it take to complete my order?

Shipment is by USPS Priority mail (or UPS if needed/requested) although lately the Postal Service has been having some struggles - we are monitoring the situation! We ship early in the week to prevent plants from getting stuck in the mail over the weekend. Deadline for orders shipping the following week is noon Sunday Eastern Time.

What if my plants/leaves arrived damaged?

Packing is done with great care and all packages are insulated with recyclable cellulose filler, but I have no control once the package is in the delivery system. Some spilled soil or a broken leaf should be anticipated from time to time.

If you wish to file a claim, you must do so within 48 hours of receiving the damaged package and provide photos of the damaged box and plants/leaves. If the claim is accepted, I will replace the damaged order with identical items as is possible. If the damaged items are no longer available a store credit may be given. Otherwise there are no refunds.

What if my plant / leaf cutting doesn't grow?

All plants and leaves are shipped in viable, healthy condition.

I do not guarantee any leaf cutting or starter plant once it is in your care and possession. But if you have any questions about violet culture or leaf starting please send me an email and I'll be happy to try to help!

What should I expect when ordering a starter plant?

Starter African violet plants are grown in 3 oz. cups but the size of the plant you receive will vary with the variety and age of the plant. All starter plants are well established and rooted. The starter plants will likely NOT have buds or blooms, but some may! Miniature and semi-miniature violets should not be potted up to larger pots in most cases, but they do benefit from repotting.

What about shipping when it's too hot or too cold?

To avoid plants/leaves being baked or frozen I will check high/low temperatures for the delivery zip code to be sure the temperatures are not too extreme. If daytime highs exceed 90F or evening lows are below 45F, I would prefer to hold your order until it is safer to ship. If you don't want me to hold your order for this reason please let me know.

What is in the soilless African violet mix you include in the leaf cutting starter kit?

I have had the best success rooting in ProMix combined with pearlite and a small amount of vermiculite, so those are the components in the rooting mix. Always be sure to lightly moisten the mix and blend it before using with cuttings. Don't saturate the planted leaves with water - water lightly and place in a clear plastic bag until new plants emerge.
