Following my own creative passion
I was raised by artist parents in California, USA. After coming to London, I spent almost 20 years of my adult life as a sample machinist for designers such as Ben de Lisi and Hussein Chalayan, as well as 3rd Yr Degree students at University of Westminster and St Martins.
I loved the work, and the people, but after supporting other's creative pursuits for so long, I decided I needed to follow my own, so I went back to college. A single mum of 30-something, with a teenage son, I completed a BA in Interior Design. But pursuing my new career path was drastically redirected when I had my 2nd son. With a partner who could support me, and finding a new slower pace raising our wonderful son, I rediscovered my art.
I jumped into book arts, after being inspired by my mum back in California. I got involved with online projects, various exhibitions and fairs. Gradually, all this making evolved into a desire to get behind the wheel of a sewing machine again, and work with cloth and textiles once again! Not so much fashion thios time, but artistic home wares.
A cool market in Brighton came along called Art Junky, which spurred me to start collecting a few bits of vintage stuff to add to my artists books and crafts. Somewhere along the way I decided to try selling on etsy. I had tried ebay, but found it a bit soulless. Plus, I loved shopping on etsy, so decided to see if I could add to the big wonderful world of handmades and vintage you can find there. My first shop © leslieworks has never really taken off, though I keep my eye on it. I decided to open a second one focusing more on my vintage and slightly more bohemian handmades. That one has done better.
I eventually got more and more into vintage, and was asked if I wanted to start a craft market at the same place as one of my regular vintage ones. I continue to run my 3rd baby, the Dandy Lion Market, recently relaunched at the Oxford in Kentish Town, and selling a unique and viby range of art, craft AND vintage, of course!
Owner, Maker, Designer, Curator, Artist, Crafter, Vintage Trader And Organiser Of The Dandy Lion Market
Raised by artist parents, I have been immersed in creativity all my life. I juggle family life with making, collecting, exhibiting, trading and running the Dandy Lion Market, at the Oxford In Kentish Town.
I love combining old and new objects and materials. Call it recycling, upcycling, revamping, or repurposing. Whatever it is, it comes naturally to me, as I am concerned with conserving resources, but also with giving new life and purpose to old things. It is all part of the creative process I love so much.
I have many ideas, and am always working on new ones. If you missed something you saw in the past, please let me know, and I'll do my best to make you one. I am a perfectionist by nature, take pride in my work and hope you find my work thoughtfully and well made.
