Mech-Fossils are individually, meticulously created by Lex Talkington.

A close-up showing some of the electromechanical 'bones' used within the Mech-Fossils.
The Mech-Fossil Series
The Mechanical-Fossil series grew from the desire to create lifeforms out of human-engineered, machined, mechanical parts. I am fascinated by the unmistakable recognition of common lifeforms and how perceptions change under close examination of this series. Most of the parts used to create these specimens belonged to mechanical or electronic consumer objects of the past; vintage cameras, adding machines, typewriters, resistors, diode, electron tubes, and other random ‘junk.’ I find many of these precision, engineered parts by deconstructing vintage 35mm cameras — down to their very basic elements including screws that may be 1mm in size. All wires used in this series are leads from transistors and resistors, etc.; bare copper wires are usually harvested from old motor coils.
I do not make exact duplicates, I do not use templates. I do recreate the same lifeforms in the same poses with similar distinct parts. Each assemblage is meticulously laid out and cast in polyester resin. A second resin is then used to coat the cast. Each Mech-Fossil is titled and signed. Each piece takes approximately 6 days to complete factoring in curing time, surface preparation, and three separate resin-pours to complete the pieces.
I take pride in designing and hand-crafting each frame used in the Mech-Fossil series. The frames are part of the sculpture — they allow natural light to consume the details of the creature and act as focal-drivers leading the eye into the center of each creature. The idea of scientific glass slides, clamped tight, used under a microscope influenced the various frame designs. The frames appear machine-made at distance, but the subtle hand-crafted imperfections are noticed up close giving the frames discoverable character.

Frequently asked questions
My Mech-Fossil is loose in the frame, what should I do?
The Mech-Fossil may move around slightly — some movement is expected. The fossil is firmly held in place by a set screw in the bottom bracket. Gently twist or tilt the cast fossil to straighten it within the fame.
If and only if you feel the fossil can easily slide out of the frame, then you can VERY GENTLY tighten that set screw using a 1.5mm hex key. WARNING: If you tighten this hex screw, BE CAREFUL not to over-tighten or you could crack the fossil casting!
How should I clean my Mech-Fossil?
You should use a very soft duster to dust both the fossil and the frame. You can use a slightly damp cloth to wipe both the fossil and the acrylic frame. Be careful not to use abrasives or they could scratch the acrylic frame backing or the fossil.
What are the Mech-Fossils made of?
For the actual fossil, I use vintage electronics and mostly 35mm camera parts. Other parts come from typwriters, sewing machines, motors, and various electronics. The fossils are meticulously arranged and then cast in a polyester resin. That cast undergoes surface cleanup and then the fossil is coated in a flexible, strong polymer resin coating. The frames are laser-cut plywood and acrylic with hand-tooled walnut brackets.
What if I want a different color frame?
I am currently not changing out frames. What you see pictured is what you'll get. I may explore colored frame options in the future. Please contact me if you want to vote on this. Thank you!
What about custom orders or commissions?
If you have any questions about custom orders or commissioning a number of Mech-Fossils, please email me at info@lextalkingtonart.com. I currently personally respond to all email in a timely fashion. Thank you!
I have vintage 35mm cameras and other things I am looking to get rid of — do you want those?
Probably, yes! If you have vintage electromechanical objects (broken or working) that you would like to give away or sell, please reach out to info@lextalkingtonart.com and we can discuss.
I am particularly interested in 35mm cameras, 8mm/16mm cameras
and projectors dating from the 1920s up to the early 1980s.
