About

Love of Jewelry

I have had a life-long fixation on all things beautiful. As a child growing up in the Midwest, I would save my allowance then rush to the local Woolworth’s hunting for treasures. It might have been a pair of barrettes, a locket, or a ring. As I grew older and became more discriminating, I became fascinated with fine jewelry. Gems and semi-precious stones replaced my love of costume beads. I especially liked Southwestern Indian jewelry and consider it to be a significant influence on my current work.

When making a piece of jewelry, I approach it as I imagine a composer of music would—going from a simple melody to a full composition for orchestra. I start with an idea (my melody) then I orchestrate it, using the beads and components that I have. Playing colors, textures, and patterns off each other—the possibilities are endless—I often make many arrangements before settling on a final piece.

A lover of the outdoors, I prefer to work with the natural beauty of stones. I strive to design decorative and bold pieces that have an earthy feel. It is this natural or organic sensibility that I hope will attract people to my work.

Recently I've discovered the beauty of glass beads. I started by working with contemporary glass beads from Venice, and have worked my way back through time to trade beads that were made in the late 1800s to early 1900s. It is fun to speculate on the stories of these antique beads could tell about their travels over three continents during hundreds of years.
