Announcement   I have been a full time professional scrimshaw artist for over 40 years. My work is collected throughout the world and has been sold in many galleries, shops and museums.

I incise each piece by my own hand with original designs that I have created on materials such as cow bone, ox bone, dromedary camel bone, shed deer, elk or moose antler, micarta, corian, mother of pearl and resin. Each material has its own individual characteristic to work on, some easier and some more challenging to achieve a beautifully finished piece of scrimshaw art.

Your satisfaction is guaranteed and all of my items are shipped to you in a gift box, ready for giving.

About

Scrimshaw History

For many years I lived in Southeastern Massachusetts and was influenced by the nearby whaling port of New Bedford with the history that filled the area. Scrimshaw was practiced by American whale men of the early 1800s who sailed out of that harbor. They spent their idle hours on long, monotonous whaling voyages etching or carving ivory or bone and handed this art form down to contemporary artists like me who are pleased to continue creating Scrimshaw in the traditional manner.

Sooner or later I had to try my hand at this craft and I have been creating scrimshaw designs as a full time profession for over 40 years. My pieces can be found in private collections, fine gift shops, catalogs and galleries throughout the world. They are all made by hand, one at a time, on various materials - both natural and man-made. I enjoy using a variety of materials in my work, bovine bone, horn, antler and man-made corian. This is the ancient art of the mariner from whaling days gone by, carried on today with modern materials to become the heirlooms of tomorrow.

I am a self-taught artist who began by painting with oils and watercolors, taking classes and workshops from talented artists whenever I could. Scrimshaw became my primary art form as I gained respect for the history that it portrays and for the early artists themselves and the hardships they endured in their long journeys.

I have long had interest in the story that scrimshaw portrays and I am enthusiastic each time I begin a new piece, appreciating the beauty of the materials as I etch each new design, getting lost in the lines that evolve into portrayals of history.
