About

Being Creative is Just My Thing

Lingua Nigra started before I knew it started. I've always been creative, working with my hands and making clothing or jewelry.
I've always been an entrepenuer, selling mood rings to my 5th grade classmates with a small markup or selling my first pair of earrings to my teachers in 6th grade.

I went to a bunch of art schools, most notably SAIC ( the School of the Art Institute of Chicago) and graduating with degrees in Fashion Design and Jewelry Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology. I initially went to F.I.T. for Fashion Design, but really felt like jewelry was my calling. I wanted to create body jewelry for myself. That was my only thought!

After stints on 47th street working as a bench jeweler, I was pretty sure that helping out smaller designers was where I wanted to be. I apprenticed for a designer for 1.5 years, helping her start her business, while in turn finding my own personal style in my jewelry. In school you're so bogged down with projects you don't have time to really have a style yet, that is if you don't have two jobs like I did!

After work I would solder together coins I collected from my travels as a tween to Spain and Brussels. I then created my first pair of earrings, which I still wear to this day. I eventually sold a few here and there, getting into a few local Brooklyn stores. I then started with my brass jewelry. After a few tries and big orders I decided to plate my jewelry so it could be more cohesive, because not everyone likes lopsided earrings! At least if they are gold, someone will buy them!!

In 2007 I joined Etsy, found the EtsyNY team and it kind of snowballed from there. I found a great group of people, most of who I call good friends. I did craft shows and met people who had stores that I would eventually be in. The jewelry world is hard, as there are so many talented people selling their stuff!

I don't do shows that often anymore, but love to still create my metal jewelry, dedicating one day a week to concentrating on new designs, orders and trend research. During the week I freelance as a...you guessed it - jewelry designer! I work on the computer to created fun costume jewelry for the masses.

I'm pretty lucky to have gone to school with no actual game plan for a career at the end and end up, ten years later still in the jewelry industry, still living in New York, as a jewelry designer with her own small line to boot.

I'm a lover, eater and creator. My love of metal took me from the fashion world into the world of fine and costume jewelry. I fell in love with the playful side of it, never intending to sell it one day!
