The little shop around the corner

Around the bend is more like it. I like to think my shop is a small cabinet of curiosities. There is always an element of quirk in my wares as if they have a mind of their own. I start off with the best intentions to make something "normal" that "anyone" would like but it never seems to happen. It's taken me while to get it - that there is no "anyone" - just "everybody else," and "everybody else" is looking for something unique, something that helps define who they are, something that tells them a story that changes every day.

I find myself attracted to making work that changes color in the light, or that has abstract patterns and free form shapes. I want these elements to be strung together by the wearer or user to string into their own personal narratives so with them, they can tell their own story about themselves.

Though I have a degree in ceramics, I am self taught in many of my processes. I make my own glazes and use a firing method to create my luster ware that has an 80% failure rate, and the results are very hard to repeat. I'm self taught in glass fusing and love experimenting, testing, pushing the envelope. For me this is so much fun and to bring that fun out into the world and share it with like minded souls thrills me to no end.

I hope you like my cabinet of curiosities. Step inside and look around. I hope to be posting more things to catch your eye very soon!

Some FAQS:
Q. What are the letters and numbers stamped on the bottom of the ceramic pieces?
A. "LAGW" are my initials (I have a very long name.) I also try to sign my work (where it fits or doesn't show through to the front) with either a stamp of my signature or a metallic colored permanent marker. The numbers, usually 3 digits represent the type of clay I used so that I know which firing and decorative options are available to me after I've made it.

Q. When you say, "Not tested for food safety," what exactly does that mean?
A. Unless otherwise stated, all my glazes are custom made by me. I have not sent them out to testing laboratories for analysis and certification, or to test to see if they will stain when in contact with acids or oils. I use them myself and find that certain glazes will fade in the dishwasher and change in color or hue over time, and that they should not go in the microwave as some get hot to the touch or some contain metals which should never go in a microwave. I point out these features in my item descriptions and enclose use and care info with the items.

Q. Can I use the bowls which are "waterproofed" but not glazed for eating or drinking?
I usually waterproof unglazed pieces with a spray on polyurethane. I can't recommend them for functional use (see above) but I have happy customers who use them functionally daily and have had no complaints. It's up to you how you choose to use them as long as you know I can't guarantee food safety.

Q. Why can't I wash some of the ceramic ware in the dishwasher?
A. Although I frequently put the personal pieces I've made for myself in the dishwasher, I find that the beautiful luster and raku glazes and carbon trails fade or become cloudy with frequent dishwasher washings. I recommend washing those by hand with dish soap and water and either drip drying or drying with a soft cloth.

Q. Why can't I put the glass dishes in the microwave?
A. Air bubbles or decorative metals may exist/be embedded in the fused glass and they may explode and crack the piece in the microwave, so please don't put them in there.

Q. Can I eat off the glass dishes and wash them in the dishwasher?
A. Unless I specifically state that the object is made out of found glass containing metals, or cracks, yes you can eat off them and wash them in the dishwasher.

Q. Why don't you sign your glass work?
A. Until I can find a pretty way to sign them that won't show on the front I typically don't sign my glass pieces.
