Bringing some of the magic of nature inside your home...
My name is Lindsay and I grew up in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the Northumberland coastline. I’ve always loved watching birds through the window from the comfort of inside and one of my earliest memories is watching a blue tit feed from a net of peanuts on my Nana’s washing line.
I studied Art and English literature at York st Johns university where I was introduced to the wonderful world of surface pattern design which I went on to specialise in gaining an MSC in textile design in 2005. I settled in York with my sister close by and my beardy other half, Pete for 10 years, renting a Victorian terraced house and a rather special allotment garden.
After uni I worked as a visual merchandiser setting up window and high level displays for a ladies fashion chain whilst in my spare time I continued to design. With no design brief dictating the subject matter I naturally started to incorporate the things I love best into my designs: garden birds and flowers and plants I sketched at the allotment while beardy Pete did all the hard work.
I no longer had access to big digital fabric printers so I started to design for greetings cards and experimented with applying my designs onto natural stone tiles (when Pete isn’t gardening he’s usually tiling bathrooms & kitchens) and opened an online shop.
At the day job, retail was experiencing tough times and my position as an in store visual manager was made redundant. This led to a move from fashion to homeware and a visual trainer role which involved a lot of travel and nights away from home working on store refurbishments. By this time my online sales had increased and it became increasingly difficult to squeeze in daily trips to the nearest post office I could find, so I found a part time job and eventually took the leap to run littlebirdy designs full time in Winter 2012.
My proudest achievement is that littlebirdy designs has helped support my being able to fund (half) a mortgage and we bought our first home together here in Beverley a week before Christmas 2014. Owning a house has meant I have a dedicated space for the business in my garden studio that beardy Pete built for me so I can once again watch the birds from the comfort of inside while I work.
Owner, Maker, Designer
Hello. When I'm not working on littlebirdy designs you can find me out on nature walks, rummaging around car boot sales or attempting some DIY in my Victorian terrace.
