Testing out using myself to model clothes (I'm much more comfortable with this when my head is chopped off ;))

About

printmaking and creative reappropriation

I was fortunate enough to grow up in a creative and thrifty family and this along with a degree in Environmental Management and a personal philosophy grounded in sustainability informs my creative practice.

I revel in the challenge of UPcycling - searching for beauty and function in unexpected places and preventing the waste of potentially useful materials by reappropriating items that have already had one life and reworking, reassigning and reinventing them to give them a new life that serves a new purpose and aesthetic.

I create in a process of reverse engineering, so rather than working from a design, finding supplies and completing a piece, I gather (ok I hoard) materials and let their textures, shapes, colours and even the wear and tear inform what they will be transformed into. I collect all sorts of bits and pieces - vintage textiles, old newspaper found under the lino at my brother’s house and chunks of timber scrounged from curbside collections. There is not always a tangible ‘why’ to this gathering - the colour, texture or pattern catches my eye and as the collection builds I start to see the possibilities of what they could become. Some pieces are used exactly as they are, honouring the vintage colours and patterns. Other pieces are altered with hand drawn and hand cut screens or block prints to create additional layers and increase and enhance the complexity of the existing surface design.

I work with my lovely pal Lois in a studio in the basement of a local art shop in the South East Queensland city of Ipswich. I also have a bright little sewing room in the built in verandah of our family home where I occasionally sew when I've not taken over the dining room table.

I work around and with two fun little people. They inspire me with their constant creativity (my daughters drawings are way better than mine!!) and they make me extra conscious about the materials and products I use and how safe they are for them and the planet they are growing up on. I print with Australian made, water based, eco friendly inks, all cushion inserts are made in Australia from 100% recycled PET bottles, I use vintage and second hand fabrics as much as humanly possible and I use recycled packaging.

I love to teach and share my passion for UPcycling and making and I offer kids and adults printing, sewing and craft workshops in Ipswich and Brisbane. Feel free to contact me with any questions, workshop queries or commissions or follow along with my creative adventures over at instagram.com/littlebrowndog
