Unique Hand Made Books and Artworks

I am a born maker, never happier than when i have my hands occupied in one craft process or another. Following years of experience and a return to full-time study I am now a fine artist building an exhibition profile that has taken me to London, Cardiff and Bath this year.

I previously worked in the administration and education departments of a photographic gallery, never imagining I’d cross sides from facilitator to artist.

Leaving paid work to care for young children gave me the opportunity to plough time and energy into making. I started out sewing clothes for my daughter as a toddler and from there my interests expanded into other areas of textile work: knitting, crochet, spinning, dyeing, weaving, quilting, and more.

Full time school for the kids freed me up to pursue formal art education. I'm now a member of the first graduating year of the new Artist Designer: Maker undergraduate degree at Cardiff School of Art and Design (2015).

My college experience has increased my horizons exponentially - I was able to experiment with various materials and processes, both ancient (e.g. silk reeling, vitreous enamelling, paper folding) and modern (digital design and fabrication, 3D modelling and printing, laser cutting, CNC machining). The research and theoretical underpinning of my work is now a real strength.

I find a real synergy in the overlap between traditional hand skills and contemporary digital tools. My work for exhibition (see images above) often explores the cross over between art and science, analogue and digital, cutting edge and defunct technologies.

My love of the artist’s book developed organically. I began bookbinding in 2010 as a way of presenting my work with cyanotypes and polaroid photography. Since then I've been drawn back to the format time and again, to the point that I would now describe myself predominantly as a book artist.

I enjoy the fact that the book is perhaps the most fundamentally - instinctively - interactive format for a piece of artwork. I enjoy the intimacy between maker and reader and the possibility for multiple narratives when viewed by different people.

The physical process of binding appeals to me greatly - it plays to my strengths of concentration, exactitude and attention to detail. As well as the sheer aesthetic delight - reflecting my textiles background - of choosing combinations of materials, colour and pattern.

It's key to my integrity as an artist to keep as much of my work as possible at an affordable price-point, whilst making a modest living. In order to do this I work wherever possible in series and multiples. This shop is my way of disseminating my work direct to my audience/consumer, with the minimum of additional costs/commission.

In the shop I offer several types of work: finely bound blank albums/notebooks; limited edition artist's books featuring my original photography and other serial artworks.
