Modern wampum jewelry and watercolors handmade on Martha's Vineyard

Raised on the island of Martha's Vineyard, I had three true loves: my home, the ocean that surrounded it, and making art.

I found my niche in both performing and visual arts, inspired by the creative atmosphere that the island encompassed me in. In high school, I found a passion for photography which I took with me to the University of New Hampshire. In 2014 I graduated with a B.A. in Studio Art with a concentration in Photography and a new found love of sculpture and jewelry design.

Not long after I moved back to my little island home I developed an interest in the crafting of wampum jewelry.

Wampum, the naturally occurring purple and white coloring of the quahog shell, has a rich history on Martha's Vineyard. The native people fashioned wampum into small beads which were woven into belts used for storytelling, ceremonial gifting, and recording important treaties and historical events. Now wampum jewelry is adorned by many Island and Cape Cod residents to show appreciation for the culture of their favorite place.

Self-taught in the art of wampum work and silversmithing, I create my unique designs in my studio on Martha's Vineyard. Inspired by my home and ever-changing trends, I seamlessly blend this historically significant material with modern minimalist design. I aim to create designs that cater to everybody who loves wampum, there is truly a piece of LFD for every age and style.

All shells are locally sourced on Martha's Vineyard. Littlest Fish Designs is a proud supporter of the Martha's Vineyard Shellfish Group and an active participant in the shell recycling program.

As for the name? I am the smallest member of the Marlin family, making me the Littlest Fish.

Gift wrapping and packaging

All LFD pieces are packaged in custom burlap pouches and include a LFD business card.
I offer hand-written notes, please include in "note to buyer" at time of purchase.

I have a collection of wampum pieces from the beach, can you make me something out of that?

Unfortunately, I cannot use "found" beach wampum. The wampum I use needs to come from freshly shucked quahog shell. Found beach wampum has been weathered and tossed in the water for an unknown amount of time. This natural tumbling process calcifies the wampum over time, making it hard as a rock. These pieces are therefore unusable in the designs that I offer.

I go clamming so I have a TON of fresh quahog shell for you, can you make me something out of that?

If your quahog shell is fresh out of the ocean, then I absolutely can.
However, if the shell has been treated with heat of any kind (baked, steamed, boiled, grilled, etc.) I can't use it. The shell becomes too brittle when exposed to heat, and I won't be able to carve or shape the wampum without it breaking.

Do you offer men's jewelry?

Sure! I can modify my designs to fit any style preference. More "masculine" materials I provide are genuine leather cord and oxidized silver chain. Inquire for more information.
