I gave this ornament as a hostess gift and it was a major hit! Everyone passed him around and was asking where I got him.

Who Art These Little Wood People?

I began drawing on wooden doll forms in 2009. Personalized peg doll families had just begun to appear in the DIY world. I was intrigued by the simplicity and immediacy of the craft form, and decided to give it a try. With that first effort I realized I'd opened the door to the possiblities of the Little Wood People.

What excites me about creating Little Wood People is watching each character develop. I never feel totally in control of who will appear. I begin each piece by drawing the eyes. From the eyes comes an expression, from the expression comes an identity, from the identity comes a story, and so on, until I find I'm meeting a new and remarkable individual.

Another appealing aspect of making these figures is that they allow for meditation on people of different cultures, historical times, social and economic classes and occupations. This includes characters who I come in contact with in day-to-day life. Because of this, I experience the Little Wood Person galleries as somewhat of a visual diary.

The figures are made with unfinished wooden doll forms and lightfast colored pencil. Sometimes I use artist crayons or acrylic paint, but my preferred medium is colored pencil.

Little Wood People have made their way to customers in over 10 countries. Besides the United States, they are most popular in Australia, Singapore, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

These dolls are made using colored pencil on wood forms. I use highly pigmented artist pencils, then seal the dolls with a UVA filter acrylic varnish. Once sealed, these little guys are pretty tough, and fade resistant, although they shouldn't be displayed in direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

I can't help viewing the little people as real characters -- each has a story, or some basis in my real world. Some are completely nutty and made up, but I still feel like they've all got a tiny little soul. I list some as sets because they just seem to belong together, but I'm willing to sell almost any of them individually upon request.

I price the pieces based on the amount of work I put into each piece. Generally, the larger dolls are $26, as they are quite detailed. The smaller pieces will vary in price depending on the level of detail.

The pieces are one-of-a-kind. I don't plan what character I'm going to make at all. The joy of this work is the discovery of which little person will emerge once I pick up wood and pencil.
