In The Beginning...
cannot stress enough how the arts have been the major vehicle for my movement towards consciousness and healing in my life. I have always been an artist but have not always been powerful in my knowing of this, mostly because of what I thought being an artist meant. Artists were people like Van Gogh, or, Matisse; they had lofts in New York and gallery openings. Growing up black in a single parent household, in a housing project located in the heart of the Bible Belt, the idea of being an artist seemed exotic, unpractical, and totally inaccessible to me. I was never the star drawer in my art classes. I wasn’t full of angst or eager to make a statement. In fact, if anything, I wanted to be invisible and go unnoticed but the need to create has always been my companion in the shadows of my life. It is only now that I am working with children and young adults, trying to encourage them to take the risks of being seen and heard, that I realize not everyone would choose art over ballgames, or skating, or hiking, or eating, or sleeping. It was profound for me to realize the passion and purpose I have been waiting to be revealed to me has been with me all along. I just never let it manifest
Art has always been in my life, it was always my first choice, my focus, and my hobby. Art connects us, heals us, and soothes us. Since being in the Bay Area I have become a very out loud artist who continues to grow in my own art as well as connecting with other artists. When I moved to the Bay, I was hungry for organizations that supported my vision for social change through creative expression. My current projects include creating a young women’s support group around the idea of self-awareness through self-expression.
As a newly immerged artist, I am pushing my edge and challenging my self to step further and further out of my shadow places and share my voice and vision with the world. I have a growing arts business that requires me to walk through all of my fears, doubts, and self-criticisms and have faith in the message of my work, which is spiritual power, individual revolution, and artistic liberation. I continue to walk on a path of spiritual consciousness and enlightenment that requires me to come fully into my power so that I can effectively create change by pressing the importance of self expression in self-evolution, self awareness, and self-love.
