About

Liz Black makes Organic Art

My work is an organic dance. My paintings are collages made from ink drawings on mylar, acrylic & oil paint, and fibers! I feel a tactile, ephemeral connection with these materials!

Typically I start my day with a walk in the forest with my dog Willow. I am inspired by the creatures I observe as they move, morph, and dance. I gather organic patterns in the forest, coral reefs, weather patterns, clouds, and in micro & macro living systems.

I began creating my artistic process as a young child in the mountains of Utah, where I also collected unique patterns on rocks. I started out as a five year old making what I think of as 'glupe', a sort of gluey process where I drew pages and pages of creatures with crayons and watercolor, cut them out, and then heavily glued them into books, which I also made out of glue, and the addition of paper.

I went to art school, and graduated in 2008 with BFA in Painting, Drawing, & Printmaking. My creative process has advanced through exposure to great art and travel, but the core is still my childhood love of collage.

I have expanded my making to include sculpture, made from the same sort of paper/mylar, and fibers I use in my paintings.

I draw the organic forms with ink on a roll of mylar, and carefully cut it out with an exacto knife. The drawings sometimes end up being as long as 8 feet. After that, my search for the perfect environment begins and mostly ends up happening in nature. Then I install the paper creature sculpture and photograph.
