Community... It's in the Bag
My name is Amy Heiden, and I am the designer, sewist, and workhorse behind Long Live Handmade, an Etsy shop that sells fabric handbags, totes, and wallets. I personally draw, cut, and sew every bag and accessory that comes out of my shop. My favorite thing about what I do is experimenting with new designs, and the process of figuring out how to achieve the look I want. Sometimes I will make five or six prototypes before I finally settle on the finished design that actually makes it into my shop.
I named the shop Long Live Handmade because I truly believe in the power of the handmade community. There is a camaraderie among those who value the hard work and love that is put into handmade products. I try to put as much of myself into my shop and my designs as possible because I want to make a personal connection with the person who is going to buy it.
I come from a creative family, so it was only a matter of time before I found my niche. I had grown up watching my mother make quilts, but never took to the sewing machine because I was intimidated by it. Finally, at the age of 21, I sat down at my mother’s sewing machine and asked her to teach me. We patched together a bunch of scraps and made a pillow together. The very next day, I talked my boyfriend into buying me my very own sewing machine. I made small projects here and there, and beamed proudly whenever a friend would compliment something I had made.
The first handbag I made was from a pattern that I purchased on Etsy. I loved that thing so much, I even made more just like it as gifts for my mom and sisters. After I got the hang of making bags, and the basics of construction, I started making my own patterns and designs.
I always test the products myself before I decide that they are right for my shop. If it’s not a product that I find functional, comfortable, and fashionable, then it’s not something I want to sell to others. Using and wearing my products is also a great way to meet potential customers and promote my business by word of mouth. I’m always surprised by how often people notice my bags or ask me about them.

I love to design and create beautiful and functional products. Ideas go from my imagination to paper to fabric, and eventually into the hands of my customers, and that is what I love about the handmade community. We get each other.
