Announcement   Hi, welcome to Loop Rat!

I make sportswear using vintage fabrics.

I currently have two lines for sale. Pool and just enough. Both are men's/unisex t-shirts made from vintage fabrics and are one of a kind, but the process involved in making the shirts is quite different.

Pool shirts were made from second hand yardage.
They were inspired by skateboarding and warm weather.
They fit close to the body to inspire movement. They are a practice in deconstructing preconceived notions. Fabric intended for grandmas blouse, changes it's graphic appeal, when the context is the shape of a skateboarding shirt.
Drain the Pool

While Pool shirts are a practice in simplicity and letting go of notions, Just enough shirts are an experiment in tapping into energy. I noticed that design details came easier while listening to music. This sparked a curiosity about whether or not and how much my choices are influenced by what I hear. I decided to try designing a line of shirts while listening exclusively to one album. I wear headphones during the process of choosing and cutting fabrics. I've found that the instrumentation, phrasing of words, length of notes, and mix of sound, all contribute to my choices of fabric graphics, fabric colors, thread colors, shapes, stitch length.......A long note can become stripes, a trumpet sound the color orange.... It's become a really exciting form of collaboration.
I make four shirts per album. One in each size. Sometimes these are available for etsy sale and sometimes they are on the road with touring bands.

Refer to our policies or message me for inquiries on sizing and fiber content.

About

One of a kind athletic and formal handmade shirts.

It really makes my day when I see someone on the street wearing clothes that break the rules.
In the small seaside town where I live this mostly happens around the music store and the skatepark. I hoard fashion magazines from the library's free section and frequent design and style blogs in order to expand my horizons.
Here, clothing is practical. Surrounded by water and woods, we dress to keep warm and we get dirty. Day to day I wear clothes in which I could climb trees, but I also love to take it up a notch and pull out my vintage silk jumpsuit.
Contrast and juxtaposition are my constant companions. I get a lot of my ideas for loud bright clothing while running in the rain on a quiet forest trail.
Sometimes I sketch my ideas, but mostly I just play with fabric until I find patterns and colors that resonate. I have a friend who helps cut the fabric and perfect the fit. I sew seams on my serger, hems on my 1970's era Kenmore, and I've taught myself how to take a fairly descent photograph with a cheap digital camera.
I'm a sun seeker and have been known to take spontaneous southern road trips when the northern winter lasts too long. Making my way down the pacific coast I gather fabrics from small town second hand stores, photograph a lot of nature, and swim anywhere that is warm enough. I snatch up any fabric that might be considered outdated or ugly and I make it modern and desirable by cutting it in unexpected shapes.
I aim to dress those that inspire me. By combining my regions need for comfort and practicality with enough dissidence and originality I reckon fashion followers and skate boarders alike will opt to wear some Loop rat.

The fabric we use is bought second hand. It's washed with warm water, dried, cut, sewn, and either washed and dried again or hung out in the sun for a day.
We don't buy fabric that smells like smoke or mildew.
Sometimes there are some small holes in the fabric. We usually leave those be, imperfection enhances the aesthetic. But sometimes we mend them. We'll let you know how yours has been treated.
Same for stains. If it adds character, it gets to stay.

Because the fabrics are one of a kind, fit is unique to the finished product. Some fabrics have more stretch then others. I post the general size(s,m,l,xl) on the listing title and specific measurements in the product description.
I measure the t-shirt lying flat, they all stretch beyond the number posted.
Please refer to specific measurements to ensure a good fit.
Please ask if you have questions about fit.

Fiber content is mostly a mystery. My experience with fabrics enables me to take an educated guess about the materials used. When I shop I look for fabrics with a high cotton content. I find a lot of cotton/poly blends, some 100% cotton, and many blends including, rayons, silks, nylons, polyester....
I'll explain about the weight of the fabric and my best guess of content in the individual listing.

All seams are serged. Collars and hems are either single or double top stitched. Sometimes the shoulder seams are top stitched. And the sleeve ends are unhemmed.
