Colorful, whimsical, enchanting!

Unlike a majority of artists, my love and passion for art did not come until later on in life, in my mid teens, when a friend of mine asked me to draw some ‘fanart’ of a cartoon series we both loved, I found that once I started, I couldn’t stop. Drawing quickly became a passion and I went on to study Art and Design at College and then Fine Art at University. I now work from my studio at Flameworks Creative Arts Facility in Plymouth, UK.

During my studies, I focussed on surrealism and fantasy. I have always been interested by fantasy themes, I play video games in my spare time and love admiring the beautiful landscapes and whimsical characters in fantasy RPG's. I used this inspiration to create colorful and surreal landscapes at university, however in my spare time I drew animals. I have always been an animal lover, a particular love in my life was my old friend Jake, a border collie springer spaniel cross who was in my life from the age of 8. He passed away in October 2012, which hit me hard. Due to our loss I painted his portrait for my mum for Christmas, as well as additional animal portraits for other family members. Everyone was highly impressed by my skill and friends of family soon started requesting paintings. I decided to try and turn this into a career ever since.

Whilst I enjoyed my pet portraits, I still took a particular interest in fantasy, and started to grow fond of illustration after attending 3 short courses when I finished university. I decided to experiment with illustrating a long side painting and drawing pet portraits. My illustrations are whimsical, and often focus on both fantasy and animal themes. A recurring theme in my current illustrations have been dragons, which have always been one of my favourite mythical creatures - and a lot of fun to draw!

My process is always changing, I am constantly experimenting in my artwork with different mediums and how I use them and never quite know how something is going to come out. Sometimes I will sketch before hand, sometimes I will dive straight into a final piece. It is extremely exciting seeing how a piece will turn out, especially if it goes well!

I created my Etsy shop to transform what I love to do into a career. Louise Rabey Art and Illustrations is currently a one person team, I run this shop solely by myself from creating the work to photographing and packaging.

My aim is simply to brighten up peoples homes and lives, with my colorful and playful style. I love what I do, and wouldn't change it for the world!
