I love this pouch. I didn't know what to expect and thought it might be crinkly like a chip bag, but it's not at all. You're doing a great thing and I wish you weren't retiring!

About

Trash to Treasure

Lou has spent the last 8 years vehemently advocating for the reduction and responsible use of plastic bags on the East Coast. Her journey started in San Diego where she witnessed first hand the extent of coastal waste, learned about Algalita, Captain Charles Moore, and the growing plastic waste movement. She has since moved the mission to Massachusetts, as she teaches others how to help diminish the growing Atlantic trash Gyre. Her creative business, Lou's Upcycles, has turned advocacy into action by creating an accessory line from fused, post-consumer, un-recyclable plastic bags. Hundreds of households across the country have donated over 50,000 bags to her one woman business. When not in her studio, she teaches workshops that explore her process, her mission, and all of our solutions.

Lou's Upcycles turns post-consumer plastic bags into innovative, graphically appealing textiles using the heat and pressure of an iron and heat press to fuse the bags to themselves. This textile is the base for a host of products which additionally involve combining rescued textiles for interior linings, and neckties for shoulder straps. Lou works alone and combines design, collage, and quilting skills, creating each piece from start to finish. From glasses cases to totes, patterns are of Lou's own creation and her designs are constantly evolving.

Shop policies

Last updated on April 5, 2016
The mission of Lou's Upcycles is to take un-recycable plastic packaging otherwise headed for the landfill and upcycle it into wearable, functionable, trashion art. Plastic bags are turned into fabric using heat and pressure then collaged and quilted together to ensure a durable, long lasting accessory.
While a very, very, small portion of supplies are bought new, 99.99% of the materials used are found, scavenged and re-used including internal fabric linings, neckties, adornments and hardware.
