Hooray4lala

Los Angeles, California 1447 Sales On Etsy since 2007

5 out of 5 stars (707)

Announcement   25% off Shop-wide! HOORAY4LUCK is the current promotion.

I am a sucker for holidays. And not just because Hallmark told me so. I think it is jolly to mark the year by these little events and themes. And St. Patrick's Day is one of those kinds of occasions. 4 leaf clovers are the epitome of good fortune. And green is just such a welcome color for the season.

It's also one of those holidays that seems to fit in the wheelhouse of optimism where many of the hooray4lala goods "live."

So take a look around. Stay a while. Get lucky! And feel free to "get yourself something nice."
Offer expires 3-20-19.

And now back to the regularly scheduled programme...
What IS "La La?"

One definition of "La La," for me is anything that sets you to grinning and brings you joy. For some people it is balloon animals and others it is paddling a canoe. Surround yourself with what makes you Happy. Do what brings you the most Joy possible.

I also think of "La La" as a version of "BLAH BLAH," which is the constant noise of content that society throws us as humans. It can be the joyful glee of progress and innovation. It can also contain some shadows underneath that glee. Both are equally powerful.

I created this retail space several years ago, in the desire to share joyful handmade and thoughtfully curated vintage pieces with you. I also want to examine these items from the past. As a student of History and a Collector all of my life, I truly believe that we can better understand how we got to "here" if we examine, question and view the Past both critically. And with compassion.

I believe that real living occurs in minutiae--it's in the details. I am also an apartment dweller with limited space. For me and for others, I believe that collecting vintage "Smalls" is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the past. To get in the skin of another time. To see it from their perspective. (Sometimes *warts and all*).

Just think--it's Arm Chair Time Travel. The ability to Hold History in your Hand.

I hope that these items bring a smile to your face. I try to collect what makes me smile. What makes me pause and think...

I used to be an avid collage enthusiast. And one way in which I really came to appreciate printed material in all forms from the past, is to rip up books.
To alter photographs. You would be amazed at how this seeming "desecration" is actually a way in which to honor the past. And a challenge the present.

I encourage you to use these items as you like! Enjoy. Tear stuff up. Dismantle and Express yourself in any way that you see fit!

I have always been shocked at how much of our cultural past lands up in the landfill.
So feel free to tear it up. Literally dismantle.
Make art. Frame it.
Use it to say something.

Or just sit it on the shelf and give a pretty from the past an occasional "nod."
You'll be surprised at how it will make you Feel.

If it shocks you to think of altering these items in any way. That it is somehow less than proper...just think of it this way: how much more tragic, if these goods just get dumped and forgotten! I find that so much more disrespectful. So for whatever it is worth--you certainly have *my permission* (!) to use these how you like.

Thank you for your interest in my site and these items. I hope that they tickle and inspire you as much as they do me.

XXX,
Leslie (La La)

PS1: My favorite animal and artistic muse is a Jack Ass. What's yours?

PS2: I also have an eBay shop. I am selling many more items there. I consider Etsy my lovely curated shop of wonders. On that reflects my own aesthetic sense and sensibility. On eBay I sell similar items. However, I have broadened my range of subject matter and serve a wider client base. Do check it, though. There is some grand stuff over there! http://stores.ebay.com/hooray4lala/

PS3: I've also been a Maker all my life. My Southern Grannie would call this "messin' and 'gommin." And I guess it's true what they say about idle hands. I love to create handmade for this site and am happy to work on custom items for you. Shoot me a message if you have any project in mind!

PLUS: I am a full-time MILLINER! If you like Hats and the art of adornment, please join me over on my new website: flapperfemme.com ! I love to teach these skills, if you are in Los Angeles. I am also available for custom work. I teach at home or can come to you, to teach in a group setting. And I especially love hat repair of all kinds.

AND feel free to hit me up over on the social media--I am a regular on Facebook and Instagram!

About

History in Your Hands

I have been creative all my life.
We all are. I truly believe this. It just manifests in different talents, abilities and interests. But the Creative Impulse--it is one thing that we all have in common.

This ability--to make something out of nothing--for me, manifests in a visual material sense. Always has...

I give a lot of credit to early influences-- we did not have a lot of extra money when I was growing up. But my parents did make sure that we had plenty of bits and bobs to "make" with. And a lot of freedom to make what we liked.

Paper. Fabric. Yarn. Pens and Pencils. Wood and Paint. Beads. You name it--it was all there waiting for you.

The best feeling of all was waking up on a cold, rural Illinois Saturday morning and opening up the craft closet and wondering, "what do I want to make today?" Ahhhh....

My Georgia Grannie called it "messin' and gommin'"

I call it Fun.
I it Love.
I call it Life.

I love everything that is colorful, fun and heartfelt.
I love all that is handmade. All that is human.
I love vintage. Things that have been loved and have lived in the past.

It's our history. Our legacy.

I invite you to play with me in my Etsy shop.
From my hands to yours...
