Letting it happen

"Each person's life is like a mandala - a vast, limitless circle. We stand in the center of our own circle, and everything we see, hear and think forms the mandala of our life," according to Tibetan Buddhist nun, Pema Chodron. I agree with this sentiment and use the mandala, or concentric, form quite often in my work, both because it is a pretty fundamental symbol of the universe and because it can contain anything one can imagine - beautiful or ugly, whimsical or serious, sacred or profane.

I like to incorporate a sense of humor and lightheartedness into my work, because it is important not to take ourselves too seriously. I believe that one of the primary functions of art is to uplift the beholder. It is not always necessary to provoke heavy emotion or thought; sometimes a smile is enough.
