Lystig Yarn - Cool yarns from cool country

Hi there, and thank you for finding my shop! Welcome to Lystig Yarn.

Lystig means funny and bright in Scandinavia, and that's what I'm aiming for with my yarns. Although I love simple and cool things they don't have to be boring. Some statement colors make yarns more interesting but they're still easy to match with the other ones.

I started dying yarns by accident. I've been knitting for all of my life, at least 30 years, and a year ago when I started writing a knitting book I found these beautifully hand-dyed yarns that looked stunning already in skeins and fell in love. They were like a small pieces of art and they made me want them more. It gives me pleasure just look at them in my decoration but the biggest fun is knitting them. Never know what you get, haha: when the skein moves to your needles it might be something different what you expected but it's always beautiful: every stitch is different and someone else did that just for you by herself. It's really touching.

Well, I wanted to learn the same. Now it gives me such a pleasure to "paint" the skeins with a beautiful color palette, and I hope you can feel the same joy there too.

I get my inspiration just by looking out of window. We have beautiful pastel colored historic blocks in Helsinki, super red and violet sunsets in August and the grayest fall in November. We also have the deepest darkness for almost half of the year and lightest summer nights and the smoothest afternoon shades in July you've ever seen.

But it doesn't mean it's all about Scandic coolness. I do travel a lot and love to get the inspiration everywhere I go. Last winter when I was in Asia for a month I knitted a rice bowl socks in Bangkok, Balinese sunset mittens in Seminyak and modern Finnish socks next to Singapore Flyer. This winter I did a beanie out of November Rain colorway and looked at a super blue ocean. All funny and unexpected combinations!

So this is the first chapter of Lystig Yarn story.

All yarns are dand-dyed in Helsinki Finland by me. I hope you love Lystig Yarn too and find them as an inspiration for your crafts!

Best regards

Frequently asked questions

How do you dye the yarns?

I use professional acid dyes and quality yarns.

After dying I rinse the yarns carefully. I also wash them as long as they don't bleed. Some really bright colors or yarns with a lot of speckles may bleed a little bit during first washes and that's normal.

After washing I let them dry for a couple of days but never hang them when they all wet so they won't stretch.

Care instructions

Although most of my yarns are superwash merino, I recommend cold hand-wash. That's how the dye stays at its best.

For the same reason I never wash my knitted items without any reason, only if they have stains. Fresh air is usually enough.

I have tested my yarns in washing machine. And yes, the dye stays. But still: cold hand-wash, please!

Voiko lähestyä suomeksi?

Kyllä voi! Vastaan mieluusti, jos sinulla on kysyttävää.

Can I return it?

Yes you can, just contact me in 14 days of delivery and ship them back in 21 days. I do understand that even though I try to photograph the yarns as they are in nature and be as realistic as possible, we can see them differently from different screens.

Buyers are responsible for shipping costs for both ways. I return the cost of the item.

How do you choose the colors?

I like there's a main color and some speckles to support the idea. I don't want them to be too fuzzy so they match with other yarns easily. I also like using white as an element. It brightens the look and makes yarn vivid.

I like to keep color combinations interesting and contemporary, and I read a lot of fashion magazines. I want my yarns also to match the clothes I'm wearing.

I have recipes for the color combos but I prefer using my eyes. That's why the next dye lot is never exactly the same.

If you like to have a bigger amount of some colorway, please contact me. I do custom orders.

Custom and personalized orders

If you like to have a bigger amount of some colorway, please contact me. I do custom orders. No whole sale, sorry - but some special deliveries sometimes :)

Do you have animals?

There are no animals in my dying studio, but we have cats at home. I store my yarns in boxes at home and even though I wouldn't let the cats near the yarns, I can't guarantee totally animal free zone for the yarns, sorry!
