About

Tasked with filling a blank wall in her new West Loop condo, Mandy Adamick turned to her new surrounding for inspiration.

Black and white photos of the neighborhood landmarks sublimated to canvas sparked a new style and a new business.

A previous small business with a friend ended in Mandy getting her first "real" camera. On a whim, she and her husband took a walking tour of the West Loop and decided to snap a couple pictures to blow up to use in their new condo. When the pictures weren't as awe-inspiring as they had in mind, Mandy turned to the computer to see if she could alter them in a way that made them more urban, more abstract and more them.

What resulted was a new black and white style with small splashes of color to break up the grayscale. The contrast of the lines of the architecture subjects with the soft texture of the canvas makes for a stunning display when hung in a large group of eight or more. Inviting guests to stop and stare for a minute to pick out familiar places, this artwork is something that changes the longer you stare, different pieces coming into focus.

All of these canvases are printed using a technique called sublimation. My images are created in Photoshop and printed onto transfer paper with sublimation inks, special inks that change from liquid to gas and back without becoming a solid. Essentially once the image is heated and applied to the canvas, the inks become part of the fabric. Pretty cool, huh?

I've received a lot of questions on how to hang the canvases. I purposely leave the back of the canvas blank to allow the buyer to hang how they wish. I recommend either a medium strength double-sided velcro strip for brick or non-painted walls. Velcro will probably take some paint off depending on the adhesive strength.

For painted walls, I suggest double sided tacks which can be found at Home Depot in the picture hanger section. Nail one end into the wall and push the canvas onto the end sticking out. I suggest two per canvas so you can level it easily. If you use one tack and are not perfectly centered, the canvas can swing on that tack.
