Announcement   As you browse, notice how the wonderful symmetry of wheel-thrown work is enhanced by hand-built additions--adding character and originality to functional pieces. I hope these will bring joy!

My "day job" as a marine anthropologist leads to many of the marine-themed work and walking my dog around a neighborhood pond inspires the images of herons and other birds.

Glazes are food, dishwasher and microwave safe. You can see some other work on my facebook fan page:http://www.facebook.com/MadeleinesMudPieStudio.madmud

I am happy to be a member of the Etsy Mud Team (EMT) and Etsy Project Embrace.

Fascinating to see the transformation in glaze from the unfired to fired state!

These have just been through a Bisque firing. The mugs on the left are cochlear implant mugs, appreciated by audiologists, teachers, and of course, those who are thrilled with the benefit of this device!

About

Wheel-thrown clay with fanciful sculpture or drawings

When I was in college, my housemate asked me to attend an adult ed, class with her, learning to hand-build clay. I agreed and, though my housemate quit after two weeks, I fell in love with the wonders of clay. Thanks to an art center with talented instructors, a generous aunt who gave me her old kick wheel, and an amazing landlord who encouraged me to use his basement space for my studio, I quickly began to explore wheel-thrown work.

When I moved East for grad school, I took advantage of the all-hours policy of the school’s pottery studio. Love led to a move to the Mid-West where I gained access to another fantastic art center. There I took figure sculpture classes in exchange for helping out with the children’s classes. Eventually, after marriage, a move back East, two children and graduation, my husband presented me with an electric wheel and a kiln. Now I have a light-filled studio in a repurposed 1920’s garage (luckily too narrow for modern cars!).

A fiber artist at a crafts show told me about Etsy and the rest is history!

My studio is named after my grandmother who gave me bottles of colored water and let me make mud pies on the steps of her tiny house in Diamond Springs, CA. My mother was a fine painter but I didn't find clay until I was in grad school.

Welcome! I hope you will enjoy perusing my wheel-thrown and handbuilt stoneware and porcelain pottery. Each piece is unique and I love to experiment with new techniques and new glazes that I mix myself, so stop by anytime to see what's new. I assume that since you have come to Etsy, you value handmade items. I hope you will be enchanted with these pieces so that your daily life will be enriched by their use.

You may notice that a sea theme keeps swimming through my work. By day, I am an anthropologist who works with commercial fishing communities, so I'm often drawn to depictions of the ever changing wonders of the deep.
