Love the indigo blue color and shine of these buttons. Large enough to form pendants...great for any project!

On my first pass through the fish buttons, I guess in my excitement, I somehow missed this wonder!!! Oh, I thought, he's so special, but I'm already close to my limit for the day, so I sadly moved on to checkout. I got there, but then said to myself, "Wait are you CRAZY?" This is probably the 'most' fabulous ceramic fish you've ever seen, and you certainly won't get a second chance at him! REEL him in now! And I did! He's so more magnificent than you can imagine by his picture! He's a real wonder! Just full of fabulous colors, and he's a great big fellow! He's, without doubt, one of a kind! You know, when everything added up, I realized I'd enjoyed one of my BEST days! I'd come out ahead.

Now, these were 'just' the color of button I'd set out to find!!! Wow, they were hot!!! The red was so glossy it was like a 50's model's lipstick! None of that matte stuff here! And against the black, there was definitely something happening that was more than a little volcanic! These were perfect for me, and each button held it's own proportions of red apple to ash! If for some reason you haven't yet seen Rosemary's listings (all of them), do stop in and browse as she does just beautiful work!!!

Now these buttons were not on my list to admire as I was looking for warm colors, but green is my 'favorite' color so not easy for me to just pass by!!!! And I especially like it when it's a very shiny coppery green shade, that becomes even 'more' remarkable when you see the touches of rust that become the ideal foil for that green! I also just love this type of ceramic button, with it's hills and valleys, so that colors pool in the recesses often in the most surprising ways! Many, many thanks!

For some reason, I hadn't seen Rosemary's listing for "fish' buttons!!! I knew they would all be wonderful, and I was right! The first fish I came across, that I just couldn't get past, was the fellow above! His tail is like a shooting star!!! But it wasn't until I spied his wonderful 'eye,' that I realized 'this' button had a personality! And for some reason, it always becomes apparent after you look into that eye! If you haven't made a trip yet to the 'button' aquarium, please stop in and enjoy their ever so special qualities!

I just love 'Maine Island Buttons,' and I stop in frequently as Rosemary always seems to have something wonderful and new to tempt one! I've been looking for some warmer shades to add to my inventory, and just fell in love with these totally so sweet puffed-pink stars. To me, they look so much like tiny flowers you'd find at the alpine line. No more trees there, and you must stay on the path, but you can crouch down, and view this magnificent microcosm of tiny, elf-sized flowers in every shape and color you can think of! Thank you for sending them so soon, and always packing them so carefully!

This button is altogether different! It's uneven like a rural, mossy stepping stone. The pattern looks to me as if the rain had just begun, and as the drops fell, they made rings around them, just as if you were to throw a stone into a pool. There's also a larger sort of cedar-colored ring around the edge that encompasses the entire surface, and in some way, completes the overall pattern!

These look a little like they've been caught by a storm! There's a rich taupe-like shade at their base, and swirls of a lovely rouge wind about them! They're smaller, but their color certainly enhances their ego! Again, they are just so much lovelier in the hand!

This is another button that very hard to appreciate in total with photos. To me, it was like peering into a forest at sunset. The trees all seemed to be interlaced and their is great depth as well as texture in this one! Between her patterns and colors, Rosemary does just remarkable work using the ceramic medium. I highly recommend stopping into her shop!

This button surely is truly one-of-a-kind! Like a wheel with spokes going round, there is a great deal of movement in the piece! Then, part of the face of the button looks to have been kissed with with just a little sun so that the pink rises to it's surface! Just beautiful! Rosemary gets them sent out quickly and makes certain they're well secured. I may have bought more than I intended, but I am totally pleased with each one!

There were two of these buttons in a somewhat similar color, but they were unique in other ways ... so I solved my indecision by getting both! I find the somehow the colors seem to be layered upon one another so there's a real feeling of depth to each piece. While the base shade looks to be gray, the beautiful shades of pink really make it especially attractive!

I must admit that this button nearly jumped into my cart! It reminds me of a sandy beach with tide pools where the water comes rushing in, with all shades of blue and green! It's a honey! I sincerely suggest you stop into this shop to browse. It's filled with just lovely treasures!

This is another real favorite of mine! It's so attractive in black with it's lighter smokey shades, and the pattern isn't fussy, just smart looking! I use these buttons individually so each one is very important to me overall! They arrive promptly and well secured! Many thanks!

All the ceramic buttons i purchased from Rosemary of 'Maine Island Buttons' were really lovely! Each was so unique. Unfortunately, you can't fully appreciate them just by looking at the photos. The colors especially really 'pop' when you hold them! They were promptly sent and very well packaged as well! I suggest you stop in her shop and browse! You won't be disappointed! Many sincere thanks!

About

Buttoned up in serendipity!

Three years ago, as a Maine islander who is also a potter and a knitter, I wished to make a Maine-themed sweater for my new grandson who was expected to be born and start his childhood in Ohio. In the nation's heartland, all things Maine are exotic, so I thought it would be a novelty for my little boy to have a sweater modeled on an adult outdoorsman's sweater – complete with lobster-design buttons made by me. The sweater – and particularly the buttons – were such a hit that I was inspired to make more buttons. In fact, I enjoyed the process of fashioning each one out of stoneware or porcelain clay so much that I soon had dozens of completely hand-fashioned, original buttons.

Taking some of my buttons to a knitting store to select yarn for a new knitting project, I was utterly delighted when the shop owner invited me to show her my button output. She became my first wholesale customer. Now I also sell wholesale to several knitting stores and retail directly online, to individual customers and designers, and at fiber and crafts fairs. I feel serendipity is responsible for my button business, because I had not thought of my work as anything but useful for my own projects and then discovered that they do have appeal to others, particularly to those who appreciate handmade work and wish to use it to enhance their own projects.

My buttons are made of stoneware and porcelain and feature non-toxic, lead-free glazes. They are professionally fired twice in a high-fire gas kiln. Hand washing and air drying are recommended.
